for the price this camera is very good. I was quite surprised by how fast the auto focus is compared to my D 3000. I recently shot panning pictures and the autofocus worked quite well for this type of tricky photography. the frame rates per second are a little slow, but I knew that before purchasing the camera.a lot of the features and buttons are more intuitive to this camera than my d3000. the autofocus speed in the Live View is a little slow, however I do not use that feature it uses a lot more battery power.I have not used the video mode, because I do not shoot much video and that was not with the camera was purchased for.this camera is pure Nikon quality. it is not as fast or have quite as many fancy features as the professional line cameras, however if you were on a budget and you know how to use a camera thoroughly, this camera can do all that the intermediate cameras can do.this camera uses all of my prior Nikon mounting lenses, which is a great feature of Nikon. would I rather have a d610 or D 7200 yes, but I don't have the 1500 to 2000 dollar budget. this camera body was well worth the $233.00.thus I now have two functioning camera Bonnie that will get me through well I save my money for the more expensive Pro models. Also, Amazon shipping was great and I received the camera within 2 days.

A Powerful, Small and Light Weight Camera
I agree with the reviewer who indicates the features lacking on this camera, including the warranty card from Calumet; however, those features are not ones I care about, want or use anyway (except the warranty card), especially the folly of video in a still camera. What I wanted was exactly what I got: the new Expeed 2 image processing engine found in the top end Nikon D3S and D7000 cameras, a new 14.2 MP CMOS (not a CCD), a very small size and a very light weight, without being flimsy or junky. My complaint on professional gear and I have some is that it is too big and too heavy and it scares small children and others in the Third World. However, I want the high end picture making capabilities and muscle of the top professional gear in a light weight and small walk around camera and lens. That is what the D3100 is all about, plus, for the body only, it is still tremendous bang for the buck, especially when then used with a super standard zoom lens like the Nikon 16-85mm (forget the 18-200mm with its problems which I have also reviewed here).

Is Amazon aware of what Nikon calls "Gray Market"
Since I moved to US 10 years ago I acquired the discipline to register any new product at the site manufacturer to ensure authenticity, guarantee, service, etc. This time was not an exception, and when trying to register my new D3100 at the nikonusa.com site I got a message that states that my purchase falls into what Nikon calls "Gray Market".The issue with Gray market is the following: "Nikon Inc. USA cannot provide any technical support or warranty service on Gray Market items. Additionally Nikon Inc. USA cannot perform any fee-based repair work on Gray Market items. Please do not contact Nikon Inc. USA for help with any Gray Market products. Please contact the reseller or importer of your Gray Market items for warranty and service information as well as software updates and downloads"I sent an email through Amazon asking for a clarification and the vendor 6Ave sent me this response: "Thank you for your email. When shopping on ebay the item may be either or if the listing details do not specify specifically USA. In this case we have not specified USA in the listing and will ship which ever model is available at the time your order is placed. It is not possible to make a specific request. Models that are not covered by the manufacture warranty will be covered by our store warranty for 90 days labor and 1 year parts."1st they are assuming that I purchased the product through "ebay" regardless the fact that they are using the Amazon messaging service. This says a lot about the level of attention to details :(2nd the vendor argues that they didn't specify USA in the listing details and this is correct as the Amazon page hasn't any reference to USA3rd the vendor is assuming that Nikon will provide a guarantee and "Models that are not covered by the manufacture warranty will be covered by our store warranty for 90 days labor and 1 year parts" however there is not any legal document included in the box that certifies this, so far what I have is this email4th I do believe vendors needs to disclose this type of information "Gray Market" because Nikon products (SW, Bios, etc) are updated frequently and I am not entitled to get anything unless the store sends it to me which is something that is not going to happenTo what point Amazon is aware or even worse "endorses" this type of business practices?I acquired all my Nikon products (lenses, accessories, etc) through Amazon so this is the first time that I run into this situation :(Really disappointed with this purchase :(*** Nov 4th Update ***Per peers' feedback (Thanks folks) I am changing my rating from 1 star to 4 stars as this model is great and does exactly what is described in the tech spec. Good purchase and loving the new features (I owned a D40 before) so price/value ratio is positive.

A nice camera body for a very reasonable price.
This is a great little camera body at a nice price. I bought it so that we could have both a wide angle and a telephoto lens on vacation without having to switch out lenses all the time (we already had the lenses and didn't need a camera with a lens). Works beautifully for that, easy to use and very compact. My husband, who has the D50, grabs it every chance he gets.
