Sons of Anarchy: Season 6 [Blu-ray]

Outstanding drama that pulls no punches
I do not think I have included any plot spoilers, but I apologise if inadvertently I refer to something that was yet to be discovered by a viewer yet to watch the this Season of SOA.For myself, being hooked by SOA from the start has always been a dubious proposition to endure. The characters are hardly likeable. Ron Perlman is such a brilliant choice in terms of his facial features alone (I'm sure he won't mind me saying that), it took little imagination to accept he was genuinely a very bad dude. This review is not meant to be judgmental in terms of assuming a moralistic viewpoint. However, there are a few difficulties I find after watching each Season of SOA that are hard to reconcile. But read on - I still highly recommend this Season and the entire Series. To start with the positives, this Series just keeps on getting tougher, nastier, and gobsmackingly violent the further we peel back the layers of various characters' psyches. They are by and large all damaged goods. Crippled emotionally and thoroughly mixed up by the unrelenting violence of the world some were born into, while others sunk into their own particular version of hell. The performances, including from supporting cast members, are typically outstanding. The plot continues to thicken, every actor is shown to have their own self-interest at play, regardless of which side of the fence they sit on. There are few, if any, straight out `good guys/gals' or `bad guys/gals' in this tale. The construction of key sequences including violent confrontations are brilliantly written and executed, with what is about to go down thoroughly disguised so that the incident itself is so all the more shocking. The violence is very raw and disturbing, which certainly goes against an argument that SOA glorifies violence. Rather, violence is never very far away from the lives of people who often are already significantly brutalised and do not really know how else to react, as well as the fact that strength and power in this world is everything and showing a chink may very well get one killed. As with every other season, the standout performance is from Katey Sagal. Perhaps as never before we have a character who positions herself as the defender of the Sons, and yet beneath the surface we do not know what Gemma is truly capable of until the climax of this Season. Her actions in the climactic conclusion to this Season are beyond adequate description, and yet, in the context of the show overall, there is a symmetry or, rather, a continuity to what is perpetrated by her all in the name of `protection'.What precisely is driving Gemma, like any character of Shakespearean proportions, is almost impossible to disentangle. Gemma is a highly complex character, one of the great characters of American television in the last decade at least, and it is perhaps one of the greatest ironies that it is an extremely charismatic, manipulative, powerful, and unpredictable woman not afraid to get very violent at the drop of a hat, who almost manages to keep the Sons together. She is a great matriarch to be feared and not to be crossed, frightening in terms of the extremes she will go to - it seems there are no limits to her ferocity. I would say more on this aspect, but I do not want to spoil it.I have to say, and this is not even a quibble, more something that just gave me the sh#ts momentarily, I find the pauses in the story-line where SOA brothers engage in another round of heartfelt exchanges and man-hugs to be a little hard to swallow. I have read more than my fair share of True Crime and other non-fiction works that deal with trafficking, prostitution, drug importation and distribution, extortion, you name it.The lives of people caught up in these `enterprises' are brutal, violent, and often cut short. Suspicion is everywhere and no one is above suspicion when the chips are down. And yet, again ironically, and I am sure it is written quite deliberately this way, it is the women, Gemma and Tara, who are the strong ones, the key players, who run about supporting damaged and violent men while trying to negotiate a path through the morass (Tara in particular) without going down with the rest of them, which is a constant possibility. What nags me from time to time watching SOA is the amorality of their existence, pushing anything to make a buck, but exploiting women and every other vice known to humanity to that end, while at the same time posturing about claiming to operate by a `family' code, to go so far as to almost believe they are Charming's de facto protectors from competing forces that would only be worse. In other words, that the local presence of SOA almost ensures the perpetuation of civil life and social cohesion.I guess the trick is working out to what extent that is the blarney the Sons keep telling themselves to rationalise what they are doing, or whether the creators and writers are going so far as to assert that these guys (and gals) have legitimacy within `society'. Sort of like the Biker outfits who go on Santa runs for disadvantaged kids at Christmas time and hand out presents. It is no different to the mafia (Jewish, Russian, Italian, Irish...etc...etc...) handing out Christmas turkeys from the back of a lorry. But I'll get off my soap box.I suspect I am trying to explain the essential appeal of SOA which, on the one hand, features people and lives that are mostly, with a few notable exceptions that I can't immediately recall, fairly objectionable and completely unappealing. There is never any glorification of the life, such as it is. If anything, SOA rips away any grandiose or romantic notions of what such a life entails. And yet, on the other hand, you really do come to care for these characters, what they are struggling with, where they find themselves through fate, bad choices, or through inheritance. The tension between those trying to, or perhaps just dreaming about, extricating themselves and their family from the life, and the events that continually force them to reengage with everything that threatens their dreams, at times that tension is almost unbearable. Again, I won't say any more on that point, except to offer that this particular central theme is expertly wrought and played out without any punches being pulled.I have watched other series, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards, Dexter, The Sopranos, The Wire, The Walking Dead (are the ones I can think of) - to a lesser degree Boardwalk Empire and True Blood which, in my humble opinion, each stumbled badly at different points - and yet, curiously enough, given the hardly inspiring starting point, SOA definitely deserves a place among the very best television shows, dealing with universal and timeless themes that never grow old no matter how many times the earth has rotated on its axis.A starring role that deserves special mention is that of Jimmy Smits as Nero Padilla, wonderful in the role, as equally torn and complex a character as Katey Sagal's Gemma, it is terrific to watch Nero's mind ticking over, increasingly concerned about what he has got mixed up in, trying to retain his sanity and ultimate goal or dream among all the carnage going down around him (in another context it might almost be funny), playing a very careful game close to his chest whilst at the same time genuinely caring about the people within the Sons he has come to know. He, too, is forced to make very tough on-the-spot tough calls. Should he walk away? Should he stay. Like the other characters, the choices he makes are ones among a series of not-so-good options available to him that are in part limited by the life, and the results of which he (like the other characters) cannot know until it is far, far too late. Must his own sense of honour compel him to help and protect those who brought him into their circle?Another notable performance from the ever-stellar Peter Weller, not as key a role as that played during his stint on Dexter, yet Weller has great presence and commands the screen whenever he appears, making the other 'tough guys' look relatively mild.I highly recommend this Season of SOA - but do not think because it is this far down the track that things might get easier, or any character is going to be let off the hook.As the show's outstanding crew and cast have pulled off with aplomb, and as anyone who has read about the true nature of such criminal organisations, few if any get out unscathed and everyone inevitably gets what fate has in store for them - whether unfairly, at least in part undeserved, or entirely what they should have had coming their way in spades a long time ago. There are no winners, and mayhem and anarchy truly abounds.

Sons of anarchy was a great series
One of my favorite series ever sons of anarchy
O**!
They play fine. Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014) is good
The discs come in plastic snap cases. They play fine.Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014) is good, but the violence is cartoonish at times and thereâs a bit too much homosexual stuff for my tastes. I wanted the main protagonist to kill his mom and her boyfriend in the first episode. He gets around to killing them near the end of the series. The series ends well, all of the loose strings are tied up and all of the questions answered, thatâs why the last episode is highly rated. So a great start and a great finish but overall I liked Breaking Bad (2008-2013) better. Most people are aware of corporate espionage and what some companies will do to protect their secrets. In the TV show Breaking Bad the two main characters, Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, and Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, possess the knowledge and skill to produce the best meth on the market. And their brand is easily identifiable by its unique blue color.Several competing criminal organizations buy their services and try to replicate their product but Whiteâs and Pinkmanâs skill in the art and science of making their blue meth product isnât easily duplicated. One group tries to hold Pinkman hostage in Mexico because their highly trained scientists canât make meth as well as he does. Near the end of the series another criminal group keeps Pinkman chained in their lab and force him to make meth for them because their guy, who worked with both White and Pinkman, is unable to duplicate Pinkmanâs and Walter Whiteâs skill in the art and science of making their blue meth brand.Breaking Bad has one of the best story and character arcs ever used in a TV show, which is why it has an IMDb rating of 9.5, right up there with Game of Thrones, another great show. The Wire (2002-2008) was as good as the Sons of Anarchy, but not as good as Breaking Bad. I wonât give away the ending of Breaking Bad, but if you watch the complete series from the first episode to the last the ending will make complete sense and be very satisfying. Itâs terrific. If the above series donât sound interesting here are a few of the series I really enjoyed watching more than once: Band of Brothers (2001), Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Black Sails (2014-2017), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Lonesome Dove (1989), Lost (2004-2010), Merlin (2008-2012), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Rome (2005-2007), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek The Original Series (1966-1969) and Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001). I didnât list any contemporary series Iâm following that donât have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish, or the hundreds of fantasy and science fiction shows Iâve watched. If you like reading try some of my favorite authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.

Save your money, it didn't work
The DVDs came packaged and seemed to be new. Upon opening, you could tell it had been tampered with (broken bits of plastic, fingerprints and scratches on the DVDs, etc) so that was concerning. I tried all of the discs on 2 different fully functional DVD players and a Blu ray player just to make sure. Only one of the discs would actually read and play in the DVD player, and the screen was cut in half and glitches every 2-5 seconds. Total waste of money. Best to keep an eye out at places like Best Buy if anyone is looking.

disk 2 wrecked??
i would like to know if others had problems with the second disc in this season 6 set of dvd's. I have a brand new DVD player and have been watching the entire seasons straight through from season 1....last night, I plugged in disc two of season 6, got a warning that I needed a blu-ray player upgrade! Ridiculous! But I went online to Samsung and saw NO updates available.....i tried to view the 2nd disc again, it would play bits and pieces and then freeze up.I eventually gave up and had to go to disc 3-therefore missing a bunch of important episodes! What's up with this!

My favorite series of all times
My favorite series of all times. Action ( or perhaps violence for some), sex, and good looking bad boys. It does depict the fight between good in evil they may or may not struggle with. Not for all audiences, due to SVL.
