Worked for vintage M65 Field Jacket
I was a little nervous given the variability on some of the reviews but I washed my M65 field jacket with tech wash and then cotton proof in my washing machine and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed, water beads up on rolls off similar to what the other field jacket user reported. Short of waxing, cotton will never be truly waterproof but I would say that if there were light rain or showers in the forecast I wouldn't be concerned. In the bottle the proofer smells a little like Elmer's glue with a trace of vinegar but I can't detect it at all on the dried garment.

Made my field coat water resistant.
The media could not be loaded. I used this product on my denim jacket, an L.L. Bean field coat, 2 pairs of work pants, and my dog’s sweatshirt. After one application, the clothing had no changes in color or feel. They remained just as comfortable as they were, only now they are much more water resistant. This L.L. Bean field coat has never been treated before and is 100% cotton. I’ve had this coat for nearly 15 years, and wear it in the fall and spring. As you can see in the video, the treatment made the surface very water resistant. I wouldn’t say it made the coat fully waterproof, but it will certainly hold up in light-medium rain. This product gave new life to a beloved old coat. The rest of the clothing had similar results to the coat, and there isn’t really anything negative for me to say about this product. I will definitely use this product again in the future. The only reason I made it 4 stars is because none of the clothing is actually waterproof, just highly water resistant, especially for pure cotton.

it waterproofs canvas!!!
we have used this product frequently in the past on large outfitter type canvas tents, during the cold, damp, rainy season with excellent results, but this is the first time we used this Nikwax waterproofer to waterproof new, raw canvas...the purpose of our lil’ waterproofing project was to create a little area to sit away from the main patio where we could stay cool and dry;so, we purchased a cotton canvas drop cloth, 9 x 12 All Purpose Canvas Cotton Drop Cloth which we are using as our decorative shade and rain cloth. we choose a cotton canvas drop cloth, rather than a tarp to eliminate the grommets that make it look like a tarp... this way, we get a decorative canvas look, more of that "sail" look. that we desired.so, we washed and dried the canvas (to intentionally shrink it, in order to tighten up the weave, which reduces the hole size of the canvas weave, thus increasing opacity and decreasing water permeability (tight weave = very small holes = increased opacity/increased sun protection and better water repellency)we applied one (1) coat, per video instructions above, let it dry, and, wow!!! ... we could not be more pleased... water beads up and rolls off the canvas drop cloth like a freshly waxed car! even where we spilled some on a pair of jeans and old drop cloth, the water is beading and repelling water on those spots, just as in the demo video above on item detail page, where the host pours it over his canvas pants!i think we all love it when a project comes together...and, this one certainly did!!though we have not yet had a rain, we have experienced being well protected from the sun, and we have simulated the rain by spraying it with a water hose, watching, with pleasure, the h2o beading and rolling off, just as expected!very pleased... Thank you. :-) deke

Good stuff
As others have noted in reviews, it looks and smells like diluted Elmer's white glue. Make sure you shake well and make sure to follow instructions. My deviations from instructions:After cleaning clothes (jackets and pants) with regular detergent, I ran them full cycle with a cup of vinegar. Then removed them and ran a full cycle of just water and vinegar (no clothes) to clean out any soap.Put clothes back in, filled the machine with water (all items needed cold), added half the bottle, let agitation cycle run, then stopped machine and let everything sit for at least an hour.Re-Started machine at beginning, let it run through all cycles uninterrupted. Put clothes in dryer without a static/softener cloth on lowest heat.Did this with Wrangler cotton blend cargo work pants, a no-name poly cotton jacket, knit poly winter hat, an LL Bean barn jacket (Teflon treated from manufacturer), and a Carhartt heavy cotton duck jacket (no factory waterproofing). The LL Bean, and Carhartt jackets got a spray down of silicone after. Both bead water well, the LL Bean jacket not as well as the Carhartt. The pants bead water a bit, they do not soak up water like a towel anymore, but they are not impervious to water (impervious should not be expected anyway).I do plan on using this stuff annually on all of my usual work outerwear.

For Specific Cotton Clothes
It works wonders with cotton/ cotton blend clothes alreadytreated with DWR from THE START from the factories. This product is for reapplying already DWR-ed clothes/ gearsDo not expect this cotton proof to make regular heavy cotton things into mil-spec'd rain gears. It kinda worked on my Pendelton canvas jacket.Just like me, experiment this product on your old cotton/ cotton-blend clothes.
