King of $500 Divers (UPDATED)
I was looking at sub-$1000 divers for a couple of months. Ended up going down the Seiko rabbit-hole and discovered the King Samurai. The list of features at this price shocked me: Sapphire Crystal, Ceramic Bezel, Bright (if somewhat short-lasting) Lume, 200m, White Dial. Nothing in this price range (aside from Baltic) came close. Plus there's something cool about this chunky, old-school Seiko aesthetic. It's not trying to be a Rolex Sub or a Tudor or Omega. It's very workmanlike in its design -- ESPECIALLY if you pair it with a Crafter Blue dive strap. For an extra $65 or so you can take this good watch and make it look great. I've had this beast for less than a week and have already dinged it slightly -- however this is one of those watches that looks better with some character. I smiled when I saw the little dent. Added Bonus: my watch arrived with a "Made in Japan" dial and a perfectly aligned bezel. Three cons so far: 1. Seiko 4R movement runs around 10 seconds fast per day and only has around 40 hour reserve (at this price that's reasonable) 2. Screw down crown can be a bit gritty at times 3. Gripping the bezel isn't easy with the stock strap and very tough with the Crafter Blue upgrade.Overall I'm thrilled with this stylish yet blue-collar diving beast. Guess we were made for each other :)UPDATE: As much as I LOVED that Crafter Blue strap from an aesthetic perspective -- the rubber irritated my skin so much that I went back to the original Seiko strap. I'm so glad I did. The experience reminded me of just how comfortable these Seiko rubber dive straps are. No irritation whatsoever and the band expands nicely during times that my wrist swells. So yeah, this watch is even better value because you can't go wrong with the included strap.

Quite nice at this price point.
Overall, I'm very pleased and would buy again if priced below $425. The watch is an automatic with 23 jewels. It loses approximately one minute per week, which I find to be quite acceptable. Sapphire crystal helps prevent scratches. Some do not like the metal sleeve for the band saying it slides. I had several black silicone sleeves for another item that I simply placed in front of the metal sleeve. Blends well with the band color and keeps the metal sleeve in place. The numbers are luminescent to a degree. You can see the time in the dark for the first hour or so. I wish it had tritium inserts like a Luminox, but I am happy with the watch. I gives me a nice, business casual watch for when I don't want to wear my Apple Watch or something more dressy with suits. It finds a happy middle ground.

The perfect 200m Diver
Having followed a couple of 'influencers' on You Tube, I ordered this watch knowing that Seiko's QA has slipped over the past few years. Would I receive one with the dreaded misaligned bezel? A grey market? A knockoff instead of the real thing, especially at 25% off the list price? All I can say is this: If it's a knockoff, it sure has me fooled. Both the case back and the dial indicate the watch is made in Japan and the bezel aligns perfectly with the markers on the dial. It is a gorgeous, perfectly proportioned watch, and pictures do not do the work-of-art dial justice. Crown is large, easy to grip, and makes winding (when necessary -- this is an automatic) and adjusting the date and time a breeze. Lume is outstanding, definitely the winner of the 'lume wars' in my modest collection.I'm finicky and usually do not prefer date complications on a watch and typically do not like a cyclops on my crystal, but they are executed with aplomb on this Seiko and give it a Rolex-esque vibe while maintaining the classic Seiko style. The high-quality silicone strap is soft and supple and is thankfully not a 'lint grabber' like some silicone straps. 120-click bezel feels oil dampened and is second only to my much more expensive Oak and Oscar in quality and feel. Finally, losing less than a second per day, this Seiko is my most accurate mechanical. To sum up, I like this Seiko Prospex so much that (1) I bought an identical one for my nephew as a graduation gift, and (2) it's all but cured my watch jones (for now). If you're on the fence, have no fear. It's the real deal and it's a real winner. Definitely best-in-class at this price.
