For this cargo railway Deluxe set it requires AA size batteries 1 is put inside the locomotive. You can easily use during cell or Eveready Energizer batteries it doesn't matter which one a pack of 4 will give you an incredible long running time. It is clearly marked on the packaging of the product. When I bought this for my grandson last year who was then at that time1 years and 9 months old, he could not believe it is eyes there hasn't been a day gone by Mary has played with this set it has also had various expansion packs added to it it is a very good starting point. the layout as shown on the box measures 73,5 cm by 52 cm excluding the rock pylons. Including those pylons 79,5 x 55 centimeter. Tallest item is 13,5 cm high. Of course the lay out of the tracks can be altered to give larger dimensions.

Can the battery driven train be pushed along without damaging it when the battery runs out, or does the wheel gearing mechanism not allow it?

There's only one set of wheels that is powered. When pushed lightly that will probably slip and train will roll on the two other pairs, when pressed down firmly gearing might suffer. I would not advise to use that train as a manual. I removed it from the box until my kid was a bit older, which was easy as he had several other locomotives.
