just put together the coat rack and it is wobbly and uneven. is it supposed to be like this? did i put it together incorrectly or it built this way?

We have this and it doesn't wobble. Make sure the base underneath sits firmly in the "holder" (ie - the outer piece that goes overtop) and that the washer that bolts it together isn't skewed. That said, it's a tall and narrow piece so if you have uneven flooring or don't disperse the weight of coats/bags on it, it can wobble.

Could this be used outside by a hot tub? Or would the finish on the wood not hold up on the heat and cold?

We don't recommend our products be used outside. Though, the steel is rust resistant, it is not rust proof, and moisture can possibly discolor the wood.
