Would this work well recording a violin performance for a competition?

This will work excellent. Please do adjust the between the microphones pointing towards the violin solo rehearse and do check the level of sound using a monitor headphone

Can this work if the iPhone has a protective case? Is there enough clearance for the lightning connector to get in?

I was kinda ticked off 'cause the customer support person I consulted (I didn't buy it from Amazon) repeatedly assured me that it fits with even the Otterbox Defender. He was sadly misinformed; even after shaving off some of the ridges on the bottom of the Defender case it STILL wouldn't make a reliable connection. So I spend $18.95 on a tiny piece of plastic that extends the connector - and it works quite well. Here's a link to what I bought. It arrived today and works just fine - but $18.95 for a piece of plastic not much bigger than a quarter? Get serious. Would this mic work well to record love rock bands?

yes it would, but you have to do tests with it to get the best positioning and gain etc, very good sound and easy to work with, just a bit of practice before recording something epic and realising your gain was too high( lol happened to me)
