I picked one up on amazon warehouse deals scratch and dent Things overkill for what you need to temp out a flat top. A ptc 525f is a super accurate mechanical bimetal thermometer that cost 50 bucks. But I find people tend to believe a digital readout. I had a harborfrieght pistol case kicking around so I made a cut out for that and my cheap cheap cheap china special k type thermometer

Weve been unsing this to confirm heat plate temperature and its been spot on couldnt ask for more.

This seems to work well, responds to temperature changes fairly rapidly, and appears to be build like a tank. However, if the probe measures up to 500°F (its range seems to actually be higher - 570F ?), then why is that 30 inch cable only rated for 400 degrees? The purpose of a weighted surface probe like this one would be to continuously measure temperature over time, otherwise you could just use a much less expensive handheld probe. This means that you need to figure out how to manage that 30-inch cable to keep it below the 400F degree spec. Just saying ...

The best and only surface probe for flat tops and flat surfaces. Dont go cheap on this! Buy this one! takes curate readings in just 5 seconds when the lazer temp gun wont. Just make sure you keep it in a hard protective box or containe and keep it clean.

So far works great, I do a lot of commercial food equipment and it was exactly what I was looking for, just wish it came with a carrying case

Great for cook tops to get accurate temps.
