Works great on Apple TV 4K
I have been looking for an audio extractor for the Apple TV 4K, for reason that my (old but good) AVR only has HDMI pass through. It does not decode audio. And unlike the previous Apple TV, the latest does not have optical/audio out. There are so many of these audio extractors available, and none have consistently good reviews. I purchased a different one on Amazon which I returned because the video picture was distorted and all snow.In a second attempt I purchased this Amazon Basics extractor. Works great! Picture is no different than without the extractor. And now I have optical out for my AVR. That sound is great as well.Pretty much plug and play device. The only adjustment I made was to the Apple TV audio setting. It did not recognize that Dolby 5.1 was switched on the extractor. However it did allow me to select it. Doing so, surround sound kicked in and the Dolby indicator lit up on my AVR. Sounds great! Even sounds better than the old Apple TV with optical out.

Works Great, Use It For Apple TV and Projector
I use this adapter to split my signal from my Apple TV and send audio to my receiver and video to my projector. I've been using this for a few years and it's worked great. The only quirk is that sometimes when I start everything up (I tend to unplug stuff when I know I won't use it for a while), the full audio won't come through when I start a movie. But all I have to do is unplug and replug that adpater and it's all good.

It works.
Purchased for future use as a hedge for when my current equipment fails and manufacturers stop including AUDIO OUT (either SPDIF CoAx or RCA line out). This seems already to have started. I intend to use it strictly in an audio system, so did not attempt any video evaluation. When I first received it I checked it out with a Denon DVD-1940 CI using its stereo out (3.5 mm) into an amplifier. It did not work. After further research, it seems that both of my Denon players (one DVD and one Blu-Ray) have a pure audio option that turns off the HDMI output. On a second attempt with another DVD player from Pioneer, it worked. The simple and straightforward manual could be improved by adding a troubleshooting tip that some DVD and Blu-Ray players intended for audio use have these somewhat specific features. Also note that this is sold with no USB DC to 5 v converter, HDMI cable, 3.5mm audio, or optical or coax SPDIF cables.

Worked with older tv, roku stick and sonos soundbar
I bought it because my tv is older and doesn’t have toslink/hdmi ARC or anything i can use to connect it directly to my Sonos Ray soundbar. I have a roku stick that i’ve been using to stream on my tv for years, and I plugged in the roku into the adapter, and the tv & sonos into the output side. It worked perfectly, there is no lag. if you read the instructions, it tells you that clicking the button on the adapter and getting it to flash red means it is on 5.1. my sonos supports the 5.1 and it sounds nice and dynamic as if there was no adapter and it was connected straight to the tv. Definitely recommend, saved me from having to buy a brand new tv

Not working, connected to Sony Bravia ARC port in Stereo mode!
Search reviews for this product and Amazon reports this summary, "The product description states it supports ARC. Customers report it works well for extracting audio from the TV's ARC output to an older sound system." Based on my experience, that is not true. At least not with Sony HDMI/ARC.The extractor does not work with my new Sony Bravia X90L TV. I have the extractor connected to HDMI3 (eARC/ARC port) using a high bandwidth cable. And a 3.5mm cord connecting the extractor to my analog stereo amp and speakers. The extractor is set to 2 channel stereo. TV set to output external sound and HDMI/ARC is enabled. There is no sound from the amp / speakers. And more importantly, there is no purple light on the extractor, signifying that it's not successfully communicating TV's HDMI (ARC) port. Sony tech support networked into my TV and confirmed that HDMI3 "sees" the extractor and is trying to communicate with it, but that the extractor is not responding. After hours of troubleshooting, I returned the module.

Works! Rescue older surround sound receivers!
I have a projector home theater setup with an older, non-HDMI compatible surround sound head unit. This wasn't an issue when I was using an old Xbox one as my media player because the Xbox had a "Toslink" is optical audio out option that could go to the stereo. However, every modern streaming device (Roku, Apple TV, etc) re just HDMI out, so when I switched to a Roku Ultra I had no way to get audio. This worked great, and the 5.1 channel DTS/Dolby surround option (press the button, light turns on) is putting out great audio. Saved me from huge expense and effort of upgrading an older home theater projection setup and stereo. Recommend. I've only had it working for a day, so I'll try to update my review if the product stops working in under a year.

I recommend you consider buying other options that have either a USB-C or Micro USB cable instead.
I ordered an open box item which was supposed to be "Like New" condition. Unfortunately it was missing the power cable so the unit won't function. This one seems like it's fine but instead of replacing with the same product I plan to buy one that uses a USB-C power supply instead. That way I can always swap out the power supply with another if it gets lost or broken. There's plenty of options in this price point, so my recommendation is to buy one with more universal power option instead.

Improved pic quality along with extracting spdif audio
I had ordered another hdmi spdif audio extractor. It passed the video, with no change from a direct hdmi connection but it would not extract the audio via it's rca/spdif output. I returned that product.I figured this Amazon basic would not work either but decided to order it and try it, just for the heck of it.1) It extracted the audio via the rca/spdif output. Perfect. This is what I needed.2) I was SHOCKED at the improvement in the pic quality. It was like a video processor was added to the video chain.Hard to believe this little device is SO effective. One of the best value products that I have ever purchased.
