Great, Timeless, Versatile Pocket Knife
This knife harkens back to another time. If you're looking for high tech gadgetry then look elsewhere. This knife does everything a pocket knife should be called upon to do. I like that you can lock it open, closed or not at all. This is versatility offering a freedom of choice and I personally like that. The upgrade from carbon steel to stainless steel in this model only adds to the appeal through a modern convenience by retaining the edge retention but eliminating the extra care required of a carbon steel blade (rust protection). The unique and proven locking collar is simple but effective. And the stained wood handle is visually appealing and a weight saver (total knife weight ~1.6oz.) making it all but disappear in your pocket as it won't weigh you down. I do want to say that my knife was also stiff to open (especially the last 45 degrees) but rather than the rather cumbersome process described by other reviewers of using my oven etc, or the slow process of allowing it to wear in naturally (which is precisely the intent of Opinel) I applied 3 drops of Victorinox 4.3301 Swiss Army Knife Multi-tool Oil to the blade pivot area and it has loosened and smoothed out the opening action to perfection. If I were Opinel I would consider adding a grippy texture to the outer portion of the locking collar to ensure a better grip as it can be a bit challenging with wet/moist hands. I would say that this knife is not the best knife to use for cleaning animal or fish since the wood handle will soak up blood and locking collar seems prone to allowing fluid under it without an easy way to clean it. While I appreciate the adherence to the proven and celebrated design, just like I welcomed the introduction of a stainless steel blade I would equally welcome an improved gripping surface on the locking collar. I am not able to attest to the longevity of this knife as of yet since it is a new purchase, but if I should find any fault I will update this review.Update: Quality control appears to have a wide acceptance since I have ordered 4 of these knives and each one varies in how easily the lock ring rotates from freely to requiring enough force that I wish it had a grippier surface.

10/10 EDC knife for the realist
If you just edc a knife for opening packages and whittling, look no further than a No. 8 in stainless. The reason I say this is because not many people will ever even need to use or know how to use a pocket knife for "self defense" or "survival" purposes. This is the knife for a realist. It's non threatening, has good fit, finish and quality materials, disappears in a pocket, good ergonomics, a thin Sandvik steel blade that takes a mean edge with even a cheap diamond stone or whetstone from Harbor Freight or the dollar store, and the added bonus is that when cutting food, it doesn't impart that "high carbon" taste. If you do, however intend to use it for bushcraft purposes, the main difference between this and the carbone version is that this one doesn't rust, but it can't strike natural flints like the carbone version. It also won't get that pretty patina from normal use or forced patinas. They both are great fire starters if you keep a ferro rod handy though. They can make a mean feather stick or shavings if you are into that. When buying this, you have to have some sharpening system because it comes with a convex grind that's not ideal for edc uses. I put a 20° edge on mine using diamond stones, ceramic rods and a leather belt for stropping. When it starts losing its edge, I just touch it up with either ceramics or my belt again. You don't need to work too hard to get this thing scalpel sharp. In conclusion, when choosing my knife in the morning, I see myself going for this way more than my Spyderco, Kershaw or Gerber (USA made) knives because it's a gentleman's knife that knows how to perform. If you're not firefighter or EMT and just need a good edge for opening mail and cutting apples, look no further than this glorious friction folder. If you're a hunter or fisherman, do yourself a favor and grab one of these and a Morakniv for the harder usage tasks.

Meh?
Man, i hate to rip on a legendary brand like Opinel.....but this is a marginal at best knife.Firstly, the blade is SO STIFF TO OPEN. I mean ridiculously stiff - it feels like the hinge is just a straight-through pin and that it is rubbing on the wood sides all the way through the opening and closing motions. The metal lock collar is cool, but is way too hard to engage. If you "pinch" on it to spin it (as is natural), you will basically make it impossible to spin the lock. You have to get your finger to the side somewhat, and "push" on the side of the collar to get it to spin easily. The blade metal seems cheap to me, i don't know why.The handle is too light compared to the blade. On one good note, the blue paint is very nice, and the finish on the handle is excellent. The knife also came ridiculously sharp, but had a distinct burr on one side of the edge grind.I probably will not be purchasing another Opinel knife.EDIT:With use, the hinge has somewhat loosened - but it is certainly far too stiff.

Great Knife, good quality, handy to have, perfect size and makes for a conversation starter.
Love this knife, wear it almost everywhere in my pocket. Not too large (I'm average size - 5'10") for my hand or pocket. Very handy for opening packages, working in the yard and other assorted small tasks. Spent a few extra bucks for the cool blue colored handle version. Makes for an interesting conversation starter and you can talk a little history of the knife and Opinel. Only, very mild annoyance is that the leather thong likes to flip over to the knife side on closing, blocking the blade from it's housing. But, this is VERY minor and I can live with the extra few seconds added to my life to have to fix this each time I use it.
