Q: What kind of staples does it take the ones it recommended I bought but they do not fit?

I experienced the same befuddlement. It’s a little different from other staplers in that the staples go “upside down” (point side up) in the valley of the stapler. It works great!

Q: Is the housing made of metal?

No, it's gray-colored plastic. But there's a metal version, look for Bostitch 1110.

Q: does it open for bulletin board stapling

When I opened mine, the staple slide opened for reloading. After closing that, it I tried to staple and it worked it the open position. Hope this helps.
