What are the dimensions of the base (the space it would take up on my countertop)?

11 inches and 3/4 long with a slant, 8 inches and 1/2 high and 5inches and 1/2 wide, I don't think it takes up much space at all and I would buy this again if need be,

How wide is the largest slot?

I just measured the largest slot with a tool for exact measurements. It is the very top (Right) slot if you are facing the knife block. Mine measured 3.25 (3-1/4) inches by .25 (1/4) inches wide. These are INSIDE DIMENSIONS. The depth easily and nicely holds the whole length of my wider 8 inch Chef knife blade.
