About the Author Philip Bigler is the author of nine books including In Honored Glory: Arlington National Cemetery, the Final Post; Scandalous Son: The Elusive Search for Dolley Madison s Son, John Payne Todd; Liberty & Learning: The Essential James Madison; Hostile Fire: The Life and Death of Lt. Sharon Ann Lane; and Teaching History in an Uncivilized World. He holds a Bachelor s degree in history from James Madison University and advanced degrees in Secondary Education and in American Studies from the College of William and Mary. In 1998, Mr. Bigler was named the National Teacher of the Year during a Rose Garden ceremony hosted by then president, Bill Clinton. He has received numerous additional honors and recognition for his classroom instruction and innovative teaching methods. In 2001, Philip Bigler was appointed as the Director of the James Madison Center and he held this position through his retirement in 2010.
