I am a professional animator myself and this books reminds me of the things I learned while getting my fine arts degrees. I plan to go through it with her and help her understand how to create the characters' proportions and angles, and this book does a great job of introducing those concepts. The book's quality exceeded my expectations for a paperback book at the below $20 price range. It's pages are very high quality paper. The book cover is made of a high grade material that won't tare easily or quickly get bent or misshapen. The illustrations are large and clear and the steps to each are very clear and easy to follow. The colors are vibrant and exciting. There are loads of visuals and great images in this book. I love how it is broken into sections to explain how to make characters have different emotions, how to make lovable heroes or evil bruding villains. Or how to make clothing styles. And the images are large enough to trace with tracing paper so my daughter can begin to get a feel for the correct angles and proportions of the character's features. I am extremely pleased with this drawing guide and will be seeking out more guides from this author and publisher in the future. Review: Loved by gifted - This was a Christmas gift and the gift was so excited to get it.

Great for drawing anime schoolgirls
If you're like me, already familiar with drawing anime schoolgirls, but want to refine your skills, this book might help you. It goes into details about proportions (including proportions for younger characters, which I found to be particularly helpful), and teaches you how to give your drawings the softer moe style that's become the industry norm in modern times. Plus, it shows you lots of examples of school uniforms and a few hairstyles and poses to inspire you. The reason why I gave only 4 stars is because the book is lacking in the other areas it tries to tackle. We're given much less information about how to draw male characters, and even less about how to draw fantasy characters. I was pleasantly surprised to find an example of how to draw mecha musume (like the kancolle characters), but it was only 2 pages long and didn't go into detail about how to design the weapons and armor, which left me feeling a bit disappointed. In summary, if you already have a basic idea of how to draw anime and you're looking for a little help with slice of life schoolgirl protagonists and their little sisters, this book might be able to teach you a few tricks. But if you wanted to draw any other type of character, you will not get much out of it. I also wouldn't recommend this book for total newbies or little kids simply because of the lack of instructions.

Insightful
This book is for my 11 year old aspiring artist. After looking through the book together we found it was full of different tutorial style directions for recreating various anime characters. It has an area of focus on postures, faces, eyes, hair, etc. It offers plenty of variation in anime character styles, ages and shading styles. Overall this book is good buy, I believe an anime art enthusiast would get a lot out of it for sometime considering how dense it is.

Bought it for a middle schooler who loves to draw anime characters. She loves this book and her drawing skill has gone better after she started to apply some of the methods in the book. Highly recommended for beginners.
