Very easy to read and gripping, even though I had seen the TV series. Great descriptive writing with a good balance of adventure and emotion.

I rate these four novels extremely highly. They are, perhaps, in the shadow of Pullman's 'His Dark Materials', which is an enormous pity. These four novels show consummate story telling, with heaps of humanity, mixed with intrigue and excitement. All four are a roller-coaster of events and emotions. Where you least expect them passages of tenderness, care and regard for people shine out - made all the more telling amidst some cruel and unforgiving examples of downright human 'badness'. There is a social and political commentary alongside the stories that is woven so well into the fabric of the plot. For me the third novel, 'The Tiger in the Well' is heart of the series of four novels - and I keep wondering why it is not better known. The main characters will disappoint no one; the story telling will delight. Do not mistake these books as just the province of young adults; that would be a big mistake. Put simply, these novels cry out to be read and enjoyed.

We all know Philip Pullman as the man who wrote 'His Dark Materials' trilogy and he is the man who knows his fantasy-mystery adventures. Here Mr Pullman has decided to delve in the British past of the late 1800s to the early 1900s and follow the life of Sally Lockhart. Sally is a great heroine to follow and her crime-solving journey is a wonderful one to read, especially with reference to real life events that occurred during this time-period. I really do recommend people to purchase and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.On a side note, these books came on time and were in good condition. Happy Days :D

These four books are suitable for adult readers, as well as young adults. They have Pullman's imagination and excellent writing style. He has created some wonderful and engaging characters who you really care about. I highly recommend them to readers who want a who-dunnit with a twist.
