LOVE this knife!
Bought one when we were in Alaska. It made chopping veggies and herbs so much easier. I use it all the time. Bought this one (Alaskan made) as a gift and my daughter and grandson love using it - he's 11. You may find cheaper ones, but they are not made in Alaska and I understand they lack in quality as well.

ROCKING knife theory good/uses are endless /QUALITY knife
Alaskan Ulu rocking knife beats regular knives in use, especially for one-handed people who cannot easily keep item from moving, when cutting. / So as safe as any other knife you now own, or safer ! Buy it for everyday cooking uses. / Note; the Ulu company in Alaska has other models, fancy handles, and proper a Ulu sharpener. Rocking motion cuts sandwich with one hand. Rocking blade 6 inches long. Use it almost daily when cutting, instead of straight knife. Applied downward pressure(with handle ABOVE knife blade), while rocking, cuts items easier with speed, instead of the usual slicing movement across food. Leverage down while rocking Ulu, cuts better than slicing thru stuff, since when holding a knife handle at blade's end, leverage down force is lots less. / Works so nicely that surprised rocking knives are not common along with other utensils in stores. There are others around, but this ULU is the best. A Ulu knife gets sharpened at 15 degree angle on only one side (regular knife sharpens @ 20-25 degree angle on both sides). BUY ONLY the GREEN-HANDLED Ulu Sharpener from amazon for $13.75--correctly beveled @ 15 degrees for one side sharpening of Ulu's. Great for handicapped person, using one hand only to cut items, without having to hold item being cut with 2nd hand. Do not buy the black-handled sharpener for 9.25...not for Ulu knife. RECOMMEND, over a regular long bladed knife, for many APPLICATIONS involving cooking. (Note: review UPDATED on 8/28/2013). UPDATE Dec 2013-been using to slice my pizza, by rocking -- better than my pizza wheel ! UPDATE April 2014 - has been perfect - so easy to cut stuff with just one hand--without holding food much with other hand. My left hand is very weak, so hard to hold food.....makes slicing with regular knife, difficult. Not yet sharpened. as cuts fine ! UPDATE June 27 2014 - bought a ULU sharpener--the green one---blade got a bit sharper ! UPDATE 2/2/2017; staying shark and very useful.

Nice and useful
Was in Alaska recently and saw these knives. Could not take back on my cruise without leaving it a securtiy, so too much of a hassle. But I purchased 3 (some for family members) when I returned home. Like the knife alot for chopping vegetables. Would definitely purchase again.

Sharp yet Child-Friendly, and Good for Vegetable Mincing! Wish the Wood were Higher Quality...
One of my mom's brothers spent some time living in Alaska as a young man. He came home with a bunch of these for all of his family members, so I grew up with an Ulu knife in the kitchen. They're FANTASTIC knives, and are every bit as good at cutting up modern food as they were at carving blubber off whales. Here are the highlights (and one downside):*GOOD FOR KIDS: Ulu knives are especially good for children, since the grip keeps your hand far away from the blade while also giving you enough leverage to get a solid cut. Growing up, I used our family's Ulu to cut up my pancakes into a little grid of perfect squares. Now my family does the same thing!*GREAT WORK KNIFE: The knife is awesome for its versatility, and holds up well after prolonged use. I especially love using it to mince vegetables for soups and pico de gallo, since the rounded edge makes it the ideal tool for rocking the blade back and forth and adjusting the angle until the whole vegetable is sliced.*LOW WOOD QUALITY: While I am an unabashed fan of Ulu knives, I do wish the wood they used for this model was of higher quality. After only a short while, the wood started to kind of wear down and fray at the edges (see close-up picture of the handle). It hasn't splintered and seems to be holding steady as is, but I worry that it might not last as long as I'd like. Fortunately, the blade is holding up well. All told, I still love Ulu knives and would recommend this model as a good low-priced model. If you're looking for top quality, though, probably look for a model on the next price tier with better wood quality. Enjoy!

Great for Arthritic Hands
I really like this knife for the manageability. I have a larger rocker knife, but this onebeing smaller, cuts salad greens easily because it fits the salad bowl & is so handy for smaller jobsas well. Worth the price & would make a nice gift for someone with arthritis in the hands.

Best Kitchen Utensil, especially for Moms!
I gift this to all of my “mom” friends and always use this for “favorite things” parties! My friends joke about me and my ulu until they actually try it and they are hooked. This makes chopping and cutting (as well as clean up) super easy, and I swear it is indestructible. The rocking motion you use with this surpasses having to push a knife back and forth. Love love love!
