This is Jane Austen's last completed novel written when she was much older and much wiser, and the wisdom is seen in this book, as is evident in the choice of a self made man for it's lead hero. The book is as good as Pride and Prejudice , though it is not without its minor faults. Obviously Austen didn't get to revise this book in manner she used to do with her other books and for that reason the language is a bit coarser compared to her previous works, where she used much finer language which she is known for. Also the scenes between the lead pair are much fewer and any suggestion to love to the reader is based on the knowledge of a previous relationship, however this is compensated for in the love letter in the ending chapters which is the most touching love letters ever written. The book is marvellous indeed , and must read for lovers of classic literature. Jane Austen is a Genius !

Lost and found again love story.
After reading Emma 2 years back I had thought I would be reading more Jane Austen books but alas that couldn’t happen due to some or other reason. And I am one of those 1% people in the community who hasn’t read Pride and Prejudice, but hey I am making my progress towards it. Persuasion by Jane Austen, her last novel was published in 1817 set in Bath, England and the movie adaptation came in 2007. Though the book is just roughly 250pages long, it took me almost a week to complete it. But then again I am a little slow with classics with the dense writing style, my brain takes a lot of time to process them and connect the dots. The story revolves around Anne Elliot, an intelligent, kind and who speaks her heart but according to her father Sir Walter Elliot and her sister Elizabeth she is just a “furniture”. Due to drowning in debt the family moves to Bath to cut down expenses and they give their home on rent to Admiral and Mrs Croft. Later they found Mrs Croft’s brother is Captain Wentworth, with whom Anne had broken her engagement persuaded by Lady Russell. They meet again after 8 years without being in touch, both single and unattached. The way Anne feelings are portrayed, her suffering having given up her love of life, her situation meeting him after 8 years, her agony to see him pursue another woman, her emotions thinking that she lost her chance with Captain Wentworth and her realization that she still loved him. Everything is so beautifully portrayed. I have read somewhere that this is the least likable book by Jane Austen but I loved the whole plot of the story.

Love the book but
There are few tears here and there. Seems like they existed before packaging and probably had been kept stored for a long time. The pages are however in good condition even though the sheets seem of low quality and off white. No complains with the book, it's Jane Austen

Living through persuasions
Jane Austen clearly has her way with words, playful characters and curious plots. Right from the curtain-raiser description of the Elliott family to the careful unspooling of the various stories woven into this novel, she brings out a tale where acts of persuasion stirs feelings and social bonds. Anne Elliott, the daughter of a snobbish patriarch, is troubled by her family's displacement. She finds herself going from one place to another in search of a meaning, perhaps, something or someone to hold on to. She is looking for a bond that shall not fade like the one she had made with a man when she was 21, or like the sudden disappearance of her family away from the place she called home. She is not the leader like her elder sister who runs the house, and is certainly not the social butterfly like her other sister who is successfully leading a happily married life. She finds herself cosily fit in the background, keen in observation, busy in books and speaking only when spoken to, of something that truly interests her. But her visit to Uppercross ends up shaking her wholly when finds herself confronted with the man whom she had severed all relations with eight years ago. Anne is excited. She is confused. She is nervous. She is determined and yet she is sad because time has passed, people change and so do the works of heart. Through this journey, we find Anne unravelling- in ways she had never until then. Everything seems to be happening all at once with her and Austen makes us feel it through the very power of her flowing prose. It's still at times, it's rushed when needs speed, and sometimes, it simply meanders through slits in the wall and cracks in the sky. Hence, I suggest reading this book while also listening to the audiobook by Juliet Stevenson. You find the voice taking you deep into the story of a family that's so far and yet so close. I found myself reading a couple of chapters and then moving to the audiobook every so often. The mix seemed like the best way of reading any Austen novel, really. I did the same with Emma, and let me tell you, it's worth it. There's something so charming listening to a good narrator read a prose as delectably written by someone like Austen. This has to be my favourite Austen novel so far (I have read all her books except P&P, which I have watched a hundred times). There was so much thought and attention paid to each of her characters in this one. It was short and still it ensured other characters were given the space they deserved without shifting the attention all together. I am moved, to say the least. I cannot wait to read P&P. Please read this, or, just listen to the audiobook by Juliet Stevenson. It's excellent, I promise you.

I picked this up as part of my journey back into classics, and I'm so glad I did. Austen's writing in this one feels more mature and reflective than her earlier novels. The story moves at a steady pace, and the characters feel genuine - especially Anne, who's easy to root for. It's a quieter romance compared to modern books, but that's exactly what I needed. If you're trying to get away from lighter reads and want something with more substance, this is a solid choice. The Penguin Classics edition is well-made too, which is always a bonus.
