Ubiquiti Networks EdgeRouter X, 4-Port Gigabit Router, ER-X (Router, ER-X)

Holy cow! Ubiquity is no joke. Finally got this turd configured and whaddyaknow? The little dood is passing out IP addresses like it's Oprah. You get an IP. You get an IP. They get an IP. ----but man was that a pain to figure out. Having done very little with networking, this is not a noob friendly, plug-n-play device. For the people like me: Configure a PC with a specific static IP. [192.168.1.10/24]Connect that PC to eth0.192.168.1.1LoginConfigure for router mode using the wizard because if you close the wizard you gotta know Linux commands--and that's less fun.Set eth0 for isp.Make sure DHCP server is checked.Save, then choose Reboot.Swap your plug from eth0 to eth1.Then plug everything else the way you want. (Modem into eth0)Included directions... what do they say?....... I kid you not, (See image) but it gives a single image showing the static IP of 192.168.1.1, the internet connected to eth1, and your PC to eth0. That's the included directions. It's only partially true. But man does this have oodles of features. The firmware was from about a year ago, and updating the firmware was pretty simple... the UI is clean and super responsive. There are so many features in here I want to play with. The included DC adapter socket location doesn't make much sense to me, especially when you consider the ports LED location being in the top. But hey, you can avoid using this if you have a POE injector, I suppose. But then... why are the LEDs on top of the unit and not beside the ports? Why do you drive on a Parkway and park on a driveway? I dunno. I just don't know.I specifically like how it has a configuration backup and restore function. It'll save everything, including credentials-- so don't give it away. This makes restoring advanced configurations less of a nightmare if your decide resets, or you accenting brick a setting after a backup. Nice for idiots like me. I think certain companies make you hate configuring these things so that you love it more when you finally get it working. Either way, a solid device. Would I buy one for grandpa? Absolutely not. Not noob friendly. But I really don't think this is intended for beginners in networking; more like novice users. If someone is completely oblivious to troubleshooting, setting a static IP address, or networking in general, and you don't like them, buy one of these for them and grab your snacks. It's plugged in, configured, updated, working, very responsive, highly configurable, and connected to a UPS. I'm happy. 5 stars.Ubiquity, if you're reading this for whatever reason and want a completely savage response regarding any other products, hit me up. I've heard nothing but great things about Ubiquity products (mainly on LTT) and am willing to die on the inside a little moar.Assuming you know what the heck you're doing, and despite this not being a noob friendly device, I'm still giving this thing 5 stars because it's totally worth it. The processing power, size, build quality, specs all around, and feature list, and it's price make it all worth the 5 stars. I'd probably give it something like 4.95 stars, but whatever. You win. If you want a router without wifi capability, this is the box for you.

This is a known good product here. We have a couple already managing Ubiquiti wireless AP zones, so . My security gateway/router gave up after only a dozen years of SOHO service. I have a Edgerouter 4 on [back]order for over 8 months in anticipation of a swap out, but the old appliance decided it had enough. The Edgerouter X is available, and it a fraction of the cost of the one I can't seem to get. The Edgerouter X doesn't have all the performance/throughput of the one on backorder, bit it will do with a couple other accessories until the better part is available.Got a home or small office gateway/routing task, or multiple locations to tie together? These work quite well for those applications, at a rather convenient price and availability. I'm sure I'll find another productive use for this one if/when the backordered Edgerouter 4 finally shows up. We are good until then with the Edgerouter X.More -- There's a definite advantage with familiarity with the family of products. I'm very happy with the way the products play along under a common management console, for instance. A raspberry pi handles the logging and security tasks here, mostly because it makes it simple and keeps initial and ongoing operating costs down. We carefully manage wifi coverage with AP spacing location and power levels for instance, and maintain wifi access security with segmentation and access lists. It's a good system.
