2013 live archive set, the first release from the newly-launched Garcia Live series. This disc features a recording from the historic Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on March 1, 1980. The band performed an early and a late show on this evening, as was common at the time. The band, which included Garcia on guitar and vocals, partner in crime John Kahn on bass, Ozzie Ahlers on Keys and Johnny de Foncesca on drums at the time, was wrapping up a three-week East Coast run with the performances on this evening. Highlights including a take on the Jimmie Rodgers penned rave-up, "That's All Right," an early show encore of "Deal" and a rollicking version of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" show Jerry and the band loose and fluid at the end of the tour. Review: First Issue In The New Jerry Series Is A Sure Fire Winner! - Right first things first then - track lists are: CD1 Sugaree Catfish John How Sweet It Is Simple Twist Of Fate CD2 Sitting In Limbo That's All Right Deal Mission In The Rain That's What Love Will Make You Do CD3 Russian Lullaby The Harder They Come Tiger Rose Midnight Moonlight Dear Prudence This great gig is the first release from the new invigorated Garcia Legacy. The personnel apart from Jerry are the ever present John Kahn on bass with Ozzie Ahlers on keyboards and a young Johnny De Foncesca on drums. The set list is pretty standard offering a wide selections of composers with the self-penned songs dotted about. The recording here is first class with careful mastering from 24 track recordings. The band are relaxed (wasn't it always so with the JGB) yet get quite spirited at times such as That's All Right & Deal on CD2. A bonus with this set is Robert Hunter coming in for 2 of his songs, Tiger Rose & Promontory Rider. I hope that this series does not peter out like the excellent Pure Jerry series where (as far as I am aware) 12 releases were planned, but only eight released. It is interesting to note that in the thanks on this release, it looks as if Jerry's real family are looking after business now. If you enjoy this gig, then I would highly recommend After Midnight: Kean College 28/2/1980 which is another excellent gig with the same line-up recorded on 28th Feb 1980. The packaging is a fold out digipak with a slot for the 8 page booklet. The booklet is informative providing a potted history of the JGB with some comments from Ozzie Ahlers from an interview only last year. A minor criticism is that the print is simply too small! For me even without the Grateful Dead, Jerry produced some joyous work, and this is a prime illustration. I reckon most people who love music would find much to enjoy on these discs - I can say little more really! Review: JGB with synths! - The most noticeable aspect of this set, recorded in March 1980, is the introduction of synthesisers where you'd be used to hearing a Hammond organ. Ozzie Ahlers, late of the Van Morrison touring band, sits in with more familiar names like John Kahn and Johnny deFonseca (familiar to JGB fans, anyway), and plays what sounds a little like a dated analog synth (an Oberheim, according to the sleevenotes). It works well on a swinging fist disc, with How Sweet It Is a standout. The high points of the rest of the set are on the third disc, where Robert Hunter sits in. I'm a fan of his lyrics, of couse, but also of his solo work, and it's nice to hear the two old boys together on this album. Tiger Rose and Promontory Rider are rare enough to hear from Jerry, and work well here. This was the year of Reckoning and Dead Set and it's amazing to think that, in the Spring before those shows, Garcia was exploring a parallel course with such a different paradigm. There is only one Dead song on this, the regular first set closer Deal (Sugaree, Catfish John and Mission In The Rain are from solo work), the rest given over to JGB's usual covers (Russian Lullaby, Simple Twist of Fate, The Harder They Come), ending with, in my opinion, one of the most successful of Jerry's many covers, Dear Prudence. You know what you're getting here, even if it's on yet another 'series' (wither Pure Jerry)? Sound quality is great and the performances are warm, human and above all Garcia. Recommended, although not if you're new to this lark.

Great
Loved this. Enjoyed it very much on the first listen - loved it after the second. Really get document of 1980 JGB concert. Great music, great band that Jerry had, and great playing and singing. The fact this is a multi track recording helps. Captures the Capital Theatre sound great. All the music I loved. For anyone who knows Jerry's solo live work will know he tackles music. He will touch anything, regardless of genre. This CD is representative of that. There were many highlights, but I'll spare the details and just recommend this to any Garcia fan, or Dead fan. Fab stuff! Damn, I love that Jerry Tiger tone. Sweet!

three cd's worth of vintage J G B
very varied music content, plus a Robert Hunter as a guest. the sound is clear and well balanced, only downside is the keyboards which sound very dated in a farfisa sort of way, but all in all worth getting

'Jerry Garcia Band', 'Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band', 'Legion Of Mary', 'Old & In The Way' oder Musikern wie 'Merl Saunders', 'Howard Wales', 'David Grisman' und vielen anderen mehr). Sugaree (Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter) [14:33] 2. Catfish John (Bob McDill/Allen Reynolds) [9:56] 3. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) (Holland/Dozier/Holland) [9:05] 4. Simple Twist Of Fate (Bob Dylan) [16:16] CD 2: 1. Sitting In Limbo (Jimmy Cliff/G. Bright-Plummer) [12:40] 2. That's All Right (Jimmy Rogers) [8:09] 3. Deal (Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter) [8:22] 4. Mission In The Rain (Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter) [12:50] 5. That's What Love Will Make You Do (H. Thigpen/J. Banks/E. Marion) [8:56) CD 3: 1. Russian Lullaby (Irving Berlin) [15:39] 2. The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) [11:47] 3. Tiger Rose (Robert Hunter) [4:10] (feat. Robert Hunter) 4. Promontory Rider (Robert Hunter) [6:10] (feat. Robert Hunter) 5. Midnight Moonlight (Peter Rowan) [8:39] 6. Dear Prudence (John Lennon/Paul McCartney) [10:22] Soundqualität hervorragend.

That's All Right di Elvis Presley e una versione interminabile di Dear Prudence. Da ascoltare e riascoltare. Buona qualità audio.
