Can use LARD in this fryer. The answer is YES, I have had a ROTO Fryer for some time, five years but it is not straight forward.
I purchased this item on Oct 19th 2011. That's nearly five years ago - never had a problem with it. I have tried many other deep fryers and none compare overall with this one. The only problem I had was the lid on the oil drainer cup would keep splitting. That is not a consideration with the new model, no oil drainer cup, it drains into a jar or oil holder. I have used the T-fal easy clean and it works very well but does not justify the price over this. It also had problems reaching max temp and holding it - the fryer doesn't have that problem. The Roto fryer uses much less oil than any other fryer of the same capacity, so it is easy to move with oil in it. It reaches temp quickly and also returns to temp after addition of cold food, I guess that's because there is less oil to heat. you can store the oil in use in the fryer. Wish they would make a Digital one, make it easier to see the temp it is at. By far the best deep fryer I have owned and I have had everything from Fry Baby through Fry Daddy and the expensive Bellville Smart Fryer: (which broke after a couple of months). Exceptionally good deep fryer and reasonably priced. It is a little awkward to cook battered food - make sure you dip it in the hot fat before dropping into fryer, or it will stick to the basket., not a real problem because that is what battered food fryers normally doAfter 5 years using this appliance I still say it is a worthwhile investment if you are not a Fish and Chip aficionado. The oil never gets above 350 F it should be 370 F to really crisp the fish batter but its not bad, edible anyway!I have given up on the lid for the oil container each one they send me has the same problem, but they have now discontinued it anyway. The new friers don't have the shelf and container for oil - you have to use a jug or bottle to catch the oil and filter it your self.

5+ Stars!
Many years ago I bought a fryer almost just like this from QVC and loved it. When I finally died, I searched all over for one that was similar and I finally found it in this De’Longhi Roto Deep Fryer.Just to test it out I made some deep fried tortilla chips and they turned out perfect!I used Vegetable Oil and it heated up to 350 degrees quicker than I expected. My old version of this fryer didn’t have the ‘tilted’ feature, but it works great and uses less oil that way. The window on the top is not of much use as it immediately steams up, but that is no big deal-I expected it.I set the timer for 3 minutes and it worked like a charm frying the chips to perfection. One of the big reasons that I like this fryer is that it doesn’t leave my house with that horrible ‘Greasy Diner’ smell. The carbon filter seems to do a good job with odors, but I did use new oil so we will see how it does with older filtered oil.Clean up was a breeze. After I let the grease cool, I just parked it by the sink with a coffee can to catch the oil from the rubber hose. If I were doing a messy cook, I would place a strainer over the can to catch the loose fried crumbs. Then, I just added soapy water to the fryer, wiped with a rag and drained the water into the sink making sure to thoroughly rinse the soap out, including the hose. I left the hose out to completely dry before storing it away.I know that frying food is not the most healthy option, but it tastes SO good :) This fryer takes the hassle out of deep frying and cleaning up afterwards. If I could give it more that 5 start, I would!

Makes frys and tots so easy.
In fact I just had some for lunch. Great unit.. the only reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 was that this is the second one. The first one turned on... started warming up to about 270 degrees and then stopped working. Amazon was great... swapped it out so fast that I thought the old one was still on the porch. The new one... takes about 5-7 minutes to heat up the oil... throw in your favorite items and they are ready in no time. I have been cooking with Olive oil, it does not last as long as some of the other oils... but it is healthier for you and the items fried do not taste as greasy. I did use the drain tube feature.. i like it... so much faster and easier to drain and clean the unit out. Get yourself a screen if you want to reuse the oil you drain out. I hang it over the sink.. put a bowl in the sink and put a frying splatter screen on the bowl and use it as a large/medium particle filter. Unplug the cap off the hose and it drains out nicely.Great feature. No issues with frying unless you are going to fill it up quite a bit and the items have to stack on top of each other. I usually do two runs instead of doing it all at once. If you do load it up, just drop the bottom layer in for 30 seconds and then put the top layer on and then half way through give the items a shake in the basket and use some tongs to separate any pieces that are stuck togeather... and you will be fine by the time it finishes. Enjoy

De Longhi Deep Frier
I used this product for the 1st time and found it easy to use and easy to clean. The food fried to the desired level. Instructions were easy to follow. I loved the oil drainage tube. It made removing the oil a simple process.
