Fray Bentos Steak & Gravy Pie 425g

Nice pies which are much cheaper than they are here on Guernsey. We keep a few and use them for a quick meal.

My favourite pie! I don't understand how this brand gets knocked so much, and such good value.

Back in the 1980s I remember my well-to-do school friend who lived near the River Thames used to have these pies.They looked so posh, in their colourful tins....Years later in the late 90s I got my first house and also bought my first Fray Bentos pie! It was vile!!Fast forward 25 years and I thought it might be worth another try! Ordered on on here for me and the missus.Now, I have ordered many things on Amazon over the years, but never a pie 🥧.....I had pretty low expectations, had heard they are all gravy and hardly any meat. As my missus is from the Lake District I have recently embraced the Northern staple of chips and gravy however, so I was unperturbed!So, lid off, in the oven for 30 minutes. My pie didn't really "rise" like the picture, bit once cooked I flipped it upside down and emptied it on the plate so the pastry was at the bottom.Fair bit of meat, not loads but more than I thought. Lots of gravy. Added some fries on top and you know what, it was a cheap tasty meal!Not ground breaking but not as bad as you may be led to expect.

I love the taste of these pies. But the only problem I've found with them is that the pastry doesn't cook right through, which leaves a layer of uncooked pastry under the top layer of crispy pastry. I'm not sure how to overcome this issue, but I think next time I cook one I'll try taking the pastry off the top and cooking it separately. Unless anyone has a better idea about what to do.

Why did you choose this product over others?:Tin split when openeing so had to bin it - sadly

It's such a old school favorite for me, not much meat in it , if the makers of this product ever made a Deluxe type one Iam sure millions of people would be all over this.
