Method In The Madness

Transforming madness to method by assertive action
Just now finished reading the book, Method in the Madness. I received the book soon after it was released and read about half of it almost immediately. Intense teaching kept me away from the book subsequently and then, all of a sudden, yesterday I had an urge to finish reading it and indeed completed the balance in one sitting.I thoroughly enjoyed the book peppered with pro-tips. The informal back-channels, getting straight to the subject, importance of punctuality and several others that Mr. Iyer touched upon came out naturally through the narrative. All the instances such as saving the lives of Sikh families, the Seshan encounter, the Ottawa visit, etc., left deep impressions in me. He discussed a few instances of quietly absorbing the bitterness of the career, but made them appear natural. I did not see the ethical dilemmas of the profession; it appears that he navigated the path carefully. The success of SBM under his leadership showed the radical transformation that is possible across the country in certain 'forgotten' sectors. The book showed that with strong political will and assertive action, madness can indeed transform to method. Thank you for writing this book. I am going to recommend it to some of my colleagues and students who wish to make a difference in their chosen areas.T. PradeepApril 6, 2021

A must read for all aspiring young bureaucrats and management students
The author through his simple , straightforward narrations gives a positive and vibrant view of things that can be accomplished by a committed and passionate professional. Mr Iyer's experiences as a bureaucrat and a technocrat present an unbiased analysis of events leading to providing clean drinking water in remote villages and Swatch Bharat Mission. Through his uncomplicated prose, the author brings out many entertaining and humorous encounters which would provide useful tips to management trainees and young Civil Service entrants. Its a fascinating read and ranks one amongst the best by an Indian Civil Servant.

I was very impressed with Mr.Iyer’s leadership of the Swachh Bharat Mission—the largest successful behavioral change program in the world—as the Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India. I was keen to know the management wizardry behind this extremely complex program. This was one reason for reading “Method in the Madness”.Mr.Iyer's memoir is a very interesting reading from a wide range of perspectives, especially from a development professional perspective. The book is replete with management tips honed from years of experience from a wide range of settings of one of the most successful development professionals. The book is a must read for all those who aspire to change the lives of the most deprived in this world.

An amazing book from an Amazing person! - A Gentleman in every way!
It had been a crazy busy week of nonstop meetings, so I wanted to read a few more pages of this book before retiring early. Started reading and ended up staying awake to finish it. Even though it's 6 a.m. without sleep, I'm feeling energized.I experienced every emotion while reading this book - Compassion, surprise, love, denial and encouragement. This ONE book taught me everything, including - how to be a grounded person in the face of materialism, how to succeed in any given job with dedication (don't miss the Pro-Tips), how not to misuse the given Executive position and hold your head high, how to be a perfect father in this fast-paced money making world and finally, taught me how to be in Stithaprajna in difficult situations! What a journey Param Garu and Indira Garu had! Moving between two corners of the world with two kids is not an easy task, but they have made it very simple, easy and exciting! It highlights the importance of the support and guidance that every parent has to provide to their kids.It inspired me so much, that I might not end talking about it. You must get the hard cover to experience it :)I wish all the best to Param Garu, Indira Garu, Tara and Venkat.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
The book was a fun/humorous read, but also informative and insightful. It is rare to read about a professional with such a diverse career in different arenas - from road manager and coach of his kids as they aspired to be professional tennis players, to World Bank technocrat, to leading the wildly successful implementation of the world's largest rural sanitation program. I found his career to be inspirational and learned a lot about managing large integrated teams and taking a comprehensive approach to achieving success. I admired his ability to attain these lofty goals while placing his family at the center of his life and his highest priority. I spent a rainy day reading this entire book - I couldn't put it down. Congratulations on a fantastic book!
