Review: Fraught with a banter highly unlikely to have ever been spoken by mariners, the story introduces multiple inconsequential characters that distract without offering anything to the wholly unengaging plot. The formatting of the text is abominable, forcing the reader to read the smallest sentence in something like three lines... I should have acted on my reluctance to turn the pages and thrown the book away, instead of plodding through to the deus ex machina conclusion. I do not recommend this book. Review: I've gotten into a Alistair MacLean kick lately. Bought this book along with his first book, HMS Ulysses. I have to say that they were remarkably similar. Ulysses was better, but this wasn't too bad. I was surprised given all the negative reviews I have heard about it. Good plot twists and interesting topics but unfortunately a bit weak on character development compared to some others of his. But it was an enjoyable quick read. Recommended.

An excellent adventure story keeping one's interest to the last page. The bosun, Archie McKinnon, plays a critical part throughout the story and is essential to the survival of the hospital ship which is in mortal danger in different ways through out the story..

A classic novel to read on a summer day by the shore. No great insights to be gleaned, but fun action.
