The bottom is the same canvas as the body of the bag. There is no hard plastic insert or built-in.

Q: Would this be good for a 10 yr old boy going on a 2 week vacation?

Probably not. Its more of an overnight bag. It may be too small to hold enough for a 10yr old for 2 weeks.
