Q: Does this need to be in a straight line, or can it be in a v shape or at right angles? Do the two arms swivel?

Can be moved to any angle, lights move as well. Great for lighting several spaces.

Q: Will this work for the batchroom?

I would say no as the device doesn’t have the required safety certification for a bathroom

Q: Can you use smart bulbs

No reason why not, I imagine if you use coloured lamps you may have difficulty syncing them to the same colour if that's your aim.
