Q: Is this suitable for smaller binoculars, for example Nikon 8 X 42?

The tripod is much more heavy duty than the picture shows. I'm using it with a 20 x 80 pair of binoculars. I believe that this is well suited for the binoculars you are looking at. I am very happy with the item.

Q: Would this tripod be suitable (smooth enough movement) for shooting sports video with a dslr camera?

not really sure about smoothness since I use this for my silhouette rifle spottiing scope. It seems fine as I use it. I never do video so I'm not sure what's required for it.
