This one actually works!!!
Yes. This one actually does work. I've had a few other solar chargers over the years and they all have sort of had lackluster performance. Many would either drain your battery when there wasn't full sun or you would have to disconnect and reconnect whatever you were charging when a cloud went by. This one seems to manage the power output well when a cloud blocks the sun and re-established the charge when full sun is back.Product is well made, rigid, and seems durable. I used it while canoeing and backpacking a week in Canada and it kept my Note 9 and 6,000mah power bank charged the whole time (though I was without service and only used my phone for reading at night).Like any solar panel this size, you do need to set your expectations lower than being on the grid but with proper power management, it performed as well as I would have expected. If I wasn't using it for backpacking and needing something uber light, I would have gone for the 10in model.Only CON is the price. Its seems much more expensive materially than it should be but that is almost expected these days of pricing things not based on their value but how much someone is willing to pay. Still, they have a solid product here and could dominate their market share if they priced it more competitively.

Great phone charger
This charger is good because it uses regular batteries. The regular AA batteries it uses makes it possible to just replace them in the future unlike a charger with a built in lithium battery. It charges the phone enough to get it to 100% with enough power to charge something else (and this is charging an iPhone 5S). Any NiMH batteries work on it and it can charge them as well. Good for emergencies. After a week of not being used and leaving the batteries inside the unit it still had power in it. Makes an annoying sound when charging but this only happens with the batteries it comes with are used. When I tried regular eneloop batteries there was no sound. It appears to only happen when the batteries are fully charged and of a high capacity (2300-2500 mAh). The sound however is not a problem in loud places or when someone is desperate for power in their phone. There is no wall outlet power adapter to charge the batteries but any adapter for phones that have a USB port can be used to charge the batteries. The last 3% of the phone battery takes a long time to charge compared to when it charges from almost a dead battery but it will finish charging to 100%.

Another Great Goal Zero Product
This is my third Goal Zero product and really guys, you just cannot go wrong with this company. Their products are superb. I bought this to compliment my Goal Zero solar unit for the ability to recharge batteries when electricity goes down or out back camping for flashlights, etc. The unit itself has a flashlight, convenient. It is a handy little unit that comes with 4 Goal Zero AA batteries. What I really like (5.0) is that through this unit, I may charge any USB device from the Goal Zero solar panel or any USB source, giving me options if I don't have my computer. Remember, the only batteries you should charge in this unit are NiMH and always 4 batteries. Good instructions and illustrations included.Yep. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Yep. I would refer and buy this product again. Also, the Goal Zero folk are awesome. I have another order coming and because there was some confusion, they contacted me for clarity rather than assume what I wanted. Good folks. BUY GOAL ZERO PRODUCTS. No disappointment here.

No I do not use a smart phone for everything
POV of a wilderness guide (old school) - I purchased this unit along with the Nomad 7 primarily to charge AA & AAA batteries for my camera, GPS, and headlamp. No I do not use a smart phone for everything. The secondary use is to keep my cell phone charged in case of an emergency. I upgraded the batteries to Panasonic the Eneloop-Pro for better battery performance. The unit seems to be built well and does include the AAA battery adapter, a small plastic insert. It's not waterproof and the battery compartment door can allow water to get in, though mine has gotten rained on and still works, for what ever that's worth. It requires all four battery compartments be utilized when charging batteries. In my experience with the modern client most of them bring at least a cell phone and a headlamp to the field. (Some more electronics than food!) Most of their electronics have internal rechargeable batteries, so other than their headlamp they don't have much need for batteries. I've seen many people use these solar devices and this particular battery pack works well. ONLY FLAW I found was that because by far most people will use it as a recharging source, the designers failed to consider how to take the batteries out. NOT EASY! No little ribbon, no finger notch to get the first battery out. I put my own ribbon in, FIXED! PS: This unit is for my personal use only, clients are on there own.

Quality and easy of use from Goal Zero in a AA battery ...
Quality and easy of use from Goal Zero in a AA battery charger.Yeah it's expensive. It's why people pay top dollar for an iPhone when cheaper cell phones are on the market.(I own one of the cheaper cell phones BTW the advantages are lost on me when it comes to smart phones but I'm not looking down on iPhone users as they can make use of those things when all I need is a cell phone)Think of it like this, Apple Mac, Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux each with advantages and disadvantages.Goal Zero is like the Mac. You pay top dollar for top quality. The Goal Zero solar panel plugs directly into the charger and it just works. Like a Mac.Other brands than are just as good charge via USB so they aren't giving the full advantage of a 12 volt system and take longer to charge. They do the job just fine and work with a wide range of products. Like Windows.Or you can DIY your solar kit and have something better than Goal Zero if you know what you are doing. This will take time and effort to make it work properly. It could be great or it could blow up in your face. Just like Linux.I use Linux BTW. But I have a Windows Laptop for video games.

Critical truth
The solar panel needs more testing, as for the power bank that comes with the panel its almost useless. Was trying to charg my phone, i couldn't even get 1%, also useless for charging my other portable charger left it on charge the whole night didny even charge it 1 bar, its funny how the description says to only charge the nomad portable charger with the solar panel, when the portable charger is useless. Im currently bikepackijg and all i know this is deadweight.

Works great!
Definitely works as advertised. This will charge my phone nicely. I feel safe knowing about all their charge protection, and whatever, in there. It’s good. Great little system. And it’s convenient to have a USB powered battery charger.

bateria portatil goal zero
