Love this game in many ways! First, I was a huge fan of GI Joe when I was a kid in the 80s, so the theme is excellent, coupled with the game’s stories and cards all being very thematic and true to GI Joe. The art is fantastic and is true to the cartoon / comics. As for game play, it is very fun and challenging! You don’t want a game to be too easy or you’ll get bored with it quickly. You also don’t want a game to be too hard or you’ll be inclined to give up. While this game is definitely challenging and leans more towards being difficult to win, it is NOT hard to win if you know what you’re doing and practice enough. Yes, you may lose some games, but all one must do is adapt and learn and you’ll figure out a better strategy to win. Why would someone want to play a game that wasn’t difficult or a challenge? That’s what makes it fun and is that much more rewarding when you do win! Think about all of the times you played certain levels in a video game only to lose multiple times, but you kept replaying it because you knew you were going to beat that level or game at some point. And when you did, you felt a sense of accomplishment. That’s how this game can be. So, don’t listen to negative reviewers like Dr. D and his unjustified one-star review. Embrace the challenge and push forward until you learn, adapt and overcome! And yes there is an element of chance in this game, like many games. “Them’s the breaks” as they say! That’s how life (or real life military battles) go sometimes, and that’s what helps make this game even more challenging. BUT, the balance to that is those card draws, and more specifically random dice rolls, also help you win. While I’ve had disappointing dice rolls (multiple dice all rolling blanks), I’ve also had dice rolls that came up with hits that I was shocked to have gotten, which caused me to win that particular mission when I had very little hope of winning. Sometimes you just gotta take the bad with the good! As for negatives, I agree with other reviewers that the rulebook should have been written better. While it does explain how to play the game, there are a few things it left out (like the rifle pile), and it should have given more examples and better help to explain interactions as I had to either figure it out on my own, watch videos and/or read posts about certain abilities/interactions. However, this does NOT take away from the actual game / gameplay itself, which is why I give this game a 5-star review and not a 4-star due to the rulebook lacking some things. Major props to the game designers on this game and to Renegade for producing it! Looking forward to buying and playing the expansions!

The bad - poorly written rulebook, some of the art is a bit meh, there are only 2 missions in the base game, and with so many Joe's not all of them are in the base game. The good - everything else. The game is well designed, plays well, and captures the feel of the old GI Joe cartoons and toys. The missions have a fair amount of variability, the art for the missions and Cobra commanders is quite well done (except Major Bludd), and the game is an absolute blast. The marque Joe's are all featured in the game, and there are over 40 GI Joe's in the base game. I have played the game over a dozen times, and looking forward to the next dozen. Great game, highly recommend to any GI Joe fans. Yo Joe!
