Q: does this kit still need the mfc?

The mfc does control lights, sound and works as a speed control. But you do not need it to run this Semi Tractor. All you need is a electronic speed control (ESC) and a two channel transmitter and receiver. I would recommend getting a four channel. That would give you a head start if you would want to switch to an MFC. Hope this will help.
