can it be used with diesel fuel

In order to use diesel fuel in any kerosene heater or lamp, a 100% cotton wick is needed. Using a wick with fiberglass stiching at the top will constantly clog up rapidly. Try Miles Stairs wickshop.

If you do not run the fuel out there should not be having this problem. I have run mine for months and months and with Proper care you should not be having this kind of problem in 16 hours. Just do not run it out of fuel for that is what damages the wick. I replace mine every other Year and I use mine for at least 10 to 14 hours a day. Once a week I take a brush and run it lightly over the wick after lifting the globe off. Make sure you wait till it cools and not get burned. I keep an extra wick a home also but as long as you do NOT run it Out of Fuel it will last a Nice Long Time. Have a Great Day !!!

How much ventilation needed? Even if no CO is produced,wouldn't it consume O2 and generate CO2? Not sure I want to go sleeping with this thing on...

I would never sleep with a heater on first of all. However I have used these in small shed sized workshops for 10-12 hours with no issue and had 2-3 running in a ranch style home all day no ventilation issues. They do get warm tho and dry out the air, I would recommend putting a tea kettel full of water on top to add moisture back to the air.

How much square footage does it cover?

I'd say 500-1000sq ft depending on outside temps and height of your ceilings. If you have a ceiling fan this will make a big difference as it will more effectively circulate the heat given the heater directs most of its heat upwards.
