Hoffman 10708 Bonsai Soil Mix, 2 Quarts, Brown/A

This soil has an excellent mixture of ingredients for bosai. I am new to the process, but from comparing it to the soil from a specimen purchased on a bonsai farm, I would say it is comparable to what the farm uses in their bonsai. The bag has a ziplock so that you can reseal the bag when you are done repotting your little tree. The bag is made out of a stiff material that does not breathe so that the soil stays at the same humidity level. If you note that it is drying a bit, spray a little water inside and shake it up - do NOT saturate it, or it might mold. When purchasing this item, my advice is to order it with soft things, or order it alone. My first bag was shipped with other items that were hard and square which tore into the bag. The box was not packaged tightly enough, and the contents could slide making the hard corners of the other objects like a knife to this bag's stiff material. The soil was spilled. It was such a waste - however Amazon was great when I showed the pictures. It was just a packaging problem - life isn't perfect, and it was just dirt on the outside of the other items...it brushes off. So, order it alone, and you won't run into this...or order it with socks or something soft. :)

I recently got a Bonsai plant for myself. Since I have retired gardening has become my passion so I am attempting all kinds of things. Bonsai have always fascinated me but also intimidated me. But now I thought what the heck, give it a try. As an experienced gardener I know it is critical to have the right soil for all the different kinds of plants. So I research Bonsai soil and Hoffman's came up the best plus the price was so reasonable. The instructions on the bad make it easy to understand the process. I not sure what the long term will be as I have only had my Bonsai for about six weeks. But it looks good and the soil makes the care easier as I know the drainage is good. If you are thinking of trying your hand at Bonsai growing get this soil. It can help a more challenging adventure more sure of success. Good gardening.

I have a Chinese Evergreen bonsai tree that was in need of re-potting. I read the reviews on here and decided this one fit my needs and ordered it. It came fairly quickly in a good sized bag, enough for a few medium sized pots. for people like me who live in an apartment its an added bonus that this bag is resealable so it can be easily stored and used again. After re-potting I was AMAZED at how well my bonsai liked the soil. It started growing leaves and seemed to take to the soil very well. The soil is also fast draining as to let the roots dry out a bit between watering to avoid fungal problems. Some advice I have is to order some rocks to layer the bottom of your pot with as its not included with this item and will help drainage of your plant. Bottom line great soil!

This stuff is great. After a quick screening and cleaning (only issue I had with this product which is likely an issue with any soil that goes through the mail), this replaced my incorrect soil for my schefflera bonsai. Holds quite well, looks nice, and most importantly to me give an easy visual indicator when watering is required (color change of the substrate). In the few months I've had this soil in use the root growth has been astonishing compared to the old soil, so much so that I'm considering repotting later this year instead of waiting until next year as originally planned (this is a <1yr old plant (from a cutting) and so the root structure has not yet been defined and is showing signs of growing outside the diameter of the pot....already). The small bag size is also nice for those of us with a single plant or two as there is more than enough for multiple soil changes without having to store another huge bag of something you'll only infrequently use.

Good Quality

After attempting to care for a few bonsais over the las few years, I ended up failing and the trees died. This year I made a commitment to research thoroughly the essential before buying another tree. The soil met all the criteria that I was looking for. I.E. Moisture retention, with quick drainage to prevent rotting of the roots. It also has sufficient nutrients for the proliferation of the tree as well as the soil shows good indication when the tree needs to be watered again by drying. In addition to that, the tree that I am growing has improved its overall health!

I have not used this product, I did open the resealable bag when it arrived and the quality of it looks to be very very good. I have used other brands of soil mix before and though that I would give this one try. I will know more once I use it for a while. I liked the fact that it is medium and dark brown in color unlike some of the other more brightly colored soil mixes can be. it is a general purpose mix, so if you are going to use it for acid loving plants you will have to supplement that need by adding amendments or fertilizer. The package does claim it is good for evergreens and other plants.
