These new shapes are lovely. They combine well with the old wood pattern blocks we have. Although they are nice and thick, this makes them not line up with our Melissa & Doug pattern blocks, which makes the combo patterns a little weird. Otherwise, perfection. What a great way to get kids engaged with mathematical thinking early on without even realizing it!

This set includes four of the six standard pattern blocks shapes (green equilateral triangle, blue rhombus, red trapezoid, and yellow hexagon) and four new shapes: purple chevron (made of two blue rhombuses), pink right triangle (30-60-90 degree), a turquoise kite (made of two pink right triangles), and a gray chevron (the turquoise kite minus the blue rhombus). Although the lengths of the sides are the same as my original wooden pattern blocks, these blocks are slightly thinner, which, as another reviewer noted, makes using these with my original blocks less than ideal. An “instruction sheet” would have been nice; mathforlove.com does have some patterns and suggestions.

I love these blocks and the range of different shapes, a real step up from pattern blocks. Wish I could afford the quantity needed for a whole class! Need plenty for the creative thinkers in elementary classrooms.

This is great for those that already appreciate pattern blocks.

Awesome pattern blocks! Love everything about them!

If you are unfamiliar with pattern blocks, please understand that these are not like the wooden blocks that children build with. They are much thinner and smaller. This is a wonderful set of colorful wooden pattern blocks/tiles with a twist or two from the typical pattern block sets. Unlike traditional sets, this one does not include designs to be reproduced. Although there are a few pictures on the box that can be reproduced, these are intended to be open ended for discovery learning. Traditional pattern blocks usually include several standard geometric shapes, while this set has those plus a few that are not standard. Opening the box and unpacking the pieces was an immediate invitation to explore the variety of shapes and colors and relationships between them, testing out which ones would fit together in different ways. In each group of learners there are always some who approach open ended materials in unique ways. So while most worked to make designs, one explored which smaller blocks could be put together to replicate some of the larger shapes and another decided to work at building vertically!I was impressed by the quality of the blocks which are smooth and sturdy. They can be cleaned with a damp cloth and are color fast. The box is sturdy enough to store the blocks. Each shape arrived in its own bag and if your child likes to sort things, they can be put away in the same manner. Please note that these wood pieces can be difficult for young learners to manipulate on very smooth surfaces, because they tend to slide and shift around. A thin foam rubber mat or yoga mat will work quite well.
