Q: Can you tell me if these wallets have a gusset, and approx how many sheets of paper they will hold.

No these wallets do not have a gusset. However they will hold a fair number of sheets of paper. I have about 10 sheets of A4 paper (folded in half) in one of mine - and there is still plenty of room in the wallet. Hope this info helps.

Q: Can the barcode strip on the side of the product be removed?

Not that I've found. It's not impacted my use much although I would have preferred the option of being able to remove it. The quality of the product and its cost make up for this annoyance though. I've found that a well placed chalk label rids me of the barcode!

Q: Are they suitable as a case to hold brushes?

If you mean something like makeup brushes, then yes. The zip is quite sturdy but falls short of the sides by 10mm or so, so depends on length of the brushes. I would add that the case isn't designed to take anything of significant depth, as its just two sheets of plastic joined together. I can get two apples in and still zip it closed but more than that and you'd struggle. Hope that helps.

Q: Are these safe to put passports in while travelling through the airport?

Yes they are. However, as a frequent flyer. Its always advisable to keep your passport with you in your inside pocket.
