Q: It says they are intended for mountain bike use. Is there any particular reason they are not suitable for a road bike?

I don't see the harm for using them on a road bike, but road bikes are built with weight in mind, and these would add quite a bit of weight compared to buying just clipless pedals. They could also go on a hybrid. I bought them so that I can use them for being able to quickly ride to the shops without the need for cycle shoes, as well as being able to go on a bike ride with cycle shoes. I hope this helps.

Q: the cleats that come can be released in booth directions, or just inside??

The cleats are multi-directional release,you can release them by turning them to the inside,to the outside or even by raising your heel straight up.This makes them good for people who are new to using cleats,in an emergency you can free your shoe by using almost any sharp movement.

I did order cleats, then found out they were included when the pedals arrived. I use these on my touring bike, they're great, and I don't have to put cycling shoes on if I just want to pop to the shops.

As others have said it's 15mm. However, the gap to access this is only 4mm, and to provide the precise reason you may need a pedal wrench[1] I measured my [albeit cheap] 15mm spanner and it is 6mm thick. [1] I use the Park PW-4 which is very nice, but I would think that https://www.amazon.co.uk/DECARETA-Spanner-Function-Bicycle-Anti-Skidding/dp/B07VL2MLYY Would do just fine. And please, a dab of grease on the threads or they will never come off again!
