My son wants to learn chess, are the basic moves/rules included?

They are but this is a very small chess set. I would recommend getting a bigger one with larger pieces. These are tiny. It’s only really a travel set.

What wood is it and is it certified sustainable?

It’s not that good, the clear coat rubs off easily and the pieces are really small, some are misshaped.
