There is little evidence on the sensor of any waterproofing however I have not had a problem with it. The installation instructions suggest that the unit should be mounted no more than 5 feet above the ground. I live in a bungalow and I have mounted it approximately 7 feet above ground level such that it gets some protection from the elements from the soffit.
