Updated version works fine.
After reading the various reviews on this, I decided to take a chance. There are a couple reviews here talking about how the CAN-L line is shorted to ground. Indeed this was an issue at one point. Upon reading some of the reviews from other countries, it looks like DSD Tech was aware of the issue and fixed it, commenting as much on various reviews. So I hope that people who got the version shorted were able to get a replacement from DSD Tech.My experience with this has been fine. I did use a multimeter before intial use to see if I got the updated board or not and indeed, my board was fine. No shorts between CAN-L and ground. Instsalled drivers and such on my laptop, hooked up everyting to my 2011 VW Golf. Works fine with both SavvyCan and CANHacker.Using this setup to research the data packets sent over the CANBUS. Once I have all the data I need, I'll use that data with an Arduino Nano and MCP2515 CANBUS module to control some addressable LEDs.

It seems to work great
I used it to verify communications on an NMEA 2000 product I am developing. I used Cangaroo from Canable and it worked as soon as I got the correct connection to the bus. Vey much worth the 20$.

Defective
This device has an error on the PCB that shorts the CANL to GND and the 1040 side of the spark gap. Buy a real Canable or spend some time to cut the short out and patch with wire.

Kinda works, sometimes
Trying to replay CAN data back onto the bus this adapter will freeze after a few seconds. I've tried multiple firmware and driver versions (candlelight, gs_usb, PCAN) with both python-can and BUSMASTER. All tests end up the same: it works for a few seconds and then stops until the adapter is unplugged and plugged back in again. Guess I should have bought the expensive device instead of wasting hours of my time on this thing.
