Simplest, cleanest waterproofing installation you could ask for
Does exactly what you'd expect. The question being: what should you expect?Butyl rubber is a fascinating chemistry - the closest 'common' comparison is blu-tac. When cool, it holds its shape and whatever has been adhered to it when hot. When hot, it can turn to a thick, viscous liquid, malleable and adhesive. You can utilise its 'hot' properties either by manipulating it (like blu-tac) or by compressing it (like blu-tac) - in fact, the only thing to really keep in mind with Butyl, is unlike something like Silicone, it NEEDS compression to be watertight. It will never dry solid, so you can always take it off and reapply it, but it does need to be 'sandwiched' to work properly.Another great property is that it adheres to itself better than it adheres to anything else - this means that although it can make an awful mess if it gets too hot, if you let it cool off a little, you can pick it all back up just be running a little ball of Butyl over it. In the meantime, it means when you need specific shapes, you can easily mold it to those shapes.By getting your butyl in tape form, you're saving yourself a lot of time and effort with a mastic gun (the other common way to apply butyl) - this butyl is drier and easier to manipulate, whilst being every bit as effective. If you're looking for a way to waterproof something that will be under compression, this is the bomb.

Butyl tape is probably the best sealer out there
I've used this extensively on my motorhome, and now am using it on my boat. You have to be careful with it and not get it twisted else it's spoiled. It won't work on a wet surface and it prefers smooth but you can also use it on a rough surface if you compress it a little. Even in a marine environment it's the best stuff to use for sealing
