A Classic For A Reason
This was my first time reading The Hobbit as an adult, as a child I grew up reading this book as well as watching the old Rankin/Bass animated movie, so I have a very soft spot for this story, but I wouldn't truly come to fully appreciate the unique writing style of JRR Tolkien until finishing this book as an adult. There's a certain kind of magic that comes from reading this book, that honestly isn't matched in any other fantasy novel, not even Tolkien's other creative works. The writing style feels like a uniquely perfect blend between a bedtime story being read and narrated by your kind elderly grandfather, and a brilliant telling of an epic story that continues evolving without stopping. While this writing style does take a couple of chapters to get used to, and may not be for everybody, it's definitely for me and perfectly captures the magic of the world of Middle-earth.The characters are lively and fleshed out exactly as much as they need to be for you to get a good understanding of their personality, motives, past, strengths, and weaknesses, without going into so much detail that you learn aspects of their character that are irrelevant to a section of the story, but of course the best character of the book is our hero, Bilbo Baggins, a kind and homely man who's deepest desires are really just to be sitting at home, in his rocking chair, with good food and his pipe to smoke. Honestly, who could blame him? But when adventure literally came knocking on his door, it unlocked something within him that he never knew was there, revitalizing that innocent child-like sense of desire for adventure, which honestly feels very relatable to me, because like Bilbo, most days I'm perfectly content to just snuggle up on my couch with some nice music in the background, a book in my hand and a plate of snacks, ignoring the outside world, but every once in a while, I get the urge to go out and see the world. The story and world themselves are also brilliantly designed, the dwarves' desperate journey to reclaim their ancestral home is something that the reader can easily understand and sympathize with, and the details of the world are so vivid, that I found it impossible to not imagine myself traveling with Thorin's company every step of the way, from the beautiful green hills of the Shire to the dark, damp, twisted forest of Mirkwood. There's honestly nothing I can criticize about the story, it's a timeless classic that everyone, whether they typically enjoy fantasy novels or not, owes it to themselves to experience at least once in their life. It's a 5 out of 5 star book, no doubt!
