A tiny piece of paper solves the problem
I use these with students in grades 5-12. I keep a classroom set for math and algebra classes where they are used occasionally, and I give them to all my geometry students who need to use them frequently. Love the pointy point! Out of the dozens and dozens I’ve purchased, fewer than five have completely failed. The loose pencil problem can be solved easily by folding a small piece of paper and placing it with the pencil in the clamp. I remember doing this in high school. For the price, the quality is great.

Old school comes back to life.
I had to buy several of these for my class that I was teaching. It’s very old school but as a kid who grew up in the 80s, I love it and I brought it into the classroom and my kids loved it as well

My students love these
I have two types of compasses in my classroom and all of my students prefer these. The pointed tip makes these compasses easier to use. I do find that the compasses loosen over time and I have not found a way to successfully tighten them.

Perfect!
This was an inexpensive but sturdy set. Probably only best for older students because the tip is SHARP.

Clip does not hold pencil
I usually prefer this style compass because of the ease of changing pencils as I teach middle and high school geometry and have them create a variety of colorful construction projects. However 30% of the clips failed after changing out the pencil one time.

Break easily
While easy to use, these break too easily to be used in the classroom

Compasses are good enough for what I needed it for. Unfortunately a few of them came broken (the lock part to hold the pencil in place is broken, making the compass useless).
