What is the exact width at the endpoint, the narrow part?

The entire plank is 13 inches wide. The expansions from each end are 12 inches wide. The notches for holding them in place are 9 & 1/2 inches outside to outside.

why would anyone buy this for $399 when they can be gotten at rural king delivered for $298?

Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. The older model of the work plank is only rated for 250 lbs. The new model doubles that rating. If you are sure you're getting the new model, go for the cheapest price, but be sure to factor in shipping.
