Is the other end (where you grab it) just plain rod like the rest of the length, or is there some kind of thicker handle?

There is no thicker handle. My curtains are to the ceiling(9ft) and I'm only 5ft tall. I tend to use one hand to drag the top of the curtain , with the pole attached, and the other hand to guide the curtain. Hope this helps

Do these discolour over time, ie go yellow, or opaque? thanks

No. Mine look as good as they day we bought them - over 4 years ago! They are in two windows that get the morning sun but no discolouration at all. Thrilled with them!

Are these rods very sturdy or do they bend when pulling tall heavy curtains?

Yes they do bend and so far have been very good. We have fairly heavy curtains on 50mm poles 2.4 m long with wooden rings - sliding easily. RP Sevenoaaks.
