What’s the thickness of the frame below the ceiling

About 5 to 6 mm. It fits flat to the ceiling in our kitchen and looks like kitchen vent panel. In our case the plaster had been water damaged by a leaking en-suite shower trap and cutting the aperture in the plasterboard got rid of the mouldy softened area and made a neat repair. We now have easy access to the shower trap if we should ever need it again and a neat good looking access panel instead of a soggy yellow brown stain on the ceiling.

What is the depth of the of the edge that goes into the cut out (I have a joist that I have to fit this over)

The frame sits in the depth of 12.5mm (standard) plasterboard - I have used it to give access to shower plumbing and electrical connections in just such a situation. An excellent user friendly product - neat and tidy results.

is this product suitable to fit on the ceiling?

It is a tight fit so it should be OK on a ceiling, mine is fitted to my motorhome and has never fallen off even with the vibration

Is the flap very heavy? I need a hinged panel to cover a post chute without the flap stopping the post exiting.

The flap in not heavy, and snaps closed. It is not spring loaded. Once open the flap swings free with little resistance. I think you will need to modify the product slightly in order for it to work as you are intending.
