Q: This gets too hot to touch the control knobs and smoke comes out from behind the temp control knob. Is this normal?

The one I got also got to hot to touch the control knobs if I didn't have something on the burner, and I could smell plastic burning. Also the power cord is to short I had to add a 12 inch extension to it. But in reading the booklet that came with it, its mentioned not to operate without a pan on it, so it is a know problem. I will not buy again.

Q: Does this get hot enough to fry?

It will fry burgers, but it doesn't get hot enough to deep fry things like Chicken or fish.
