works well
Our very friendly and helpful chimney sweep recommended this Chimney Sheep to us when we asked him about the easiest way to block our chimney. We have since bought one together with an extension rod. My chimney is now safely and inexpensively blocked and draught-free, no tools needed, job done. The 'Sheep' can just as easily be removed if the chimney needs to be opened for any reason. We get the occasional small bird dropping in to see us and the thought of them dying of starvation in that dark sooty place is worrying - but not now - problem sorted. The Chimney Sheep itself is a disk of compressed wool with soft edges and a firmly attached rod/handle that is simply pushed up into the chimney forming a tight fit.Measurements are important so be sure to measure accurately and follow manufacturers guidelines.I am very happy to recommend this simple, cost-friendly effective device - in fact, I have just ordered another one for the kitchen chimney.Update on my above reviewMy second 'Sheep' has arrived - immediately installed in our unused kitchen chimney - no mess - no fuss - very little effort - no more draft. What's not to like.

No more draughts
Bought it for our open fire place, which used to let a huge amount of air in (live in Dublin, very windy almost everyday). The chimney sheep does an amazing job in preventing draughts, amazing really. Plus super easy to install a very sturdy. For such a price is highly recommended!

Bought for an 8" flue
purchased the 10" for an 8" flue and the sheep DOES fit. it feels loose to me some have been wondering if I should have gone for the 12" instead. That said - it is working. I added extensions to the handle so i could really get the sheep up the flue and voila! No more soot, and a noticable reduction in wind noise and drafts. It's relatively expensive for what it is but it does work. The offset in heating costs savings will pay for it soon enough I reckon. Too early to tell if Its going to last a long time - or if it'll really do the job during a harsh winter but so far so good.

Chimney Sheep
Now the cold weather has arrived since purchasing this item, the benefit is truly staggering. I've fitted the sheep in the flue in the living room, behind a gas fire that has been capped off; not only is that room significantly warmer but the whole house seems to have benefitted and I'm definitely not using the central heating anywhere near as much as in previous years.Fantastic item, but make sure you take time to establish the correct size needed for a snug fit and fit it correctly.

Firm Felt Draught Stopper
Much better than a chimney balloon, as they deflate and don't fit. I have a fireplace 16inches wide (at the front widest part), and approx 12 inches at the back. I bought the 10inch diameter draught excluder, which pushes easily up into the chimney through the narrow opening above where the fire goes, then it sits just up the flue. It's brilliant no more cold draughts, and no loss of heating up the chimney. The room is noticeably warmer, then when I want to light the fire it easily pulls out of the flue - just be careful as soot and small debris does collect above it, and can scatter when you pull it out - however because of its thick felt nature, most of the debris settles on the top and doesn't fall off. I then just stand it in a vase beside the fire equipment when not in use. The black handle is just the right length so that your hands don't get dirty, and you can see it so don't forget that it's there and light a fire! This is a fantastic item and must pay for itself in saving on the heating bills alone!

Needed additional packing out to secure
Finally decided we should do something about the draft created by the chimney particularly given it’s only used at Xmas and hence out of use for 360 days each year. The sheep looked a good option and we bought a size larger than the flue diameter plus 2 extension pieces for the handle. It’s a standard modern round clay/terracotta flue.Unfortunately there was a slight bend at the bottom of the flue and I wasn’t convinced the sheep would hold in place. No question it did work in stopping the draft and we noticed an immediate benefit. However, 1st gale it blew out and being Xmas I just did a temp fix by padding out with bubble wrap.Since had time to do a better job using the foam lining from an old bed pillow and it is now totally secure and draft free. I also bought 2 more handle extensions (so the handle is now 3ft long in total) which makes fixing and removal of the sheep so much easier.Overall, if I’d done a full diy job, using makeshift materials, I don’t believe the end result would have been as good so in that respect I’m pleased with the original purchase. The 4 additional handle extensions have added an extra £12 to the cost but for ease of use they’ve been very good.Quality wise, both the sheep and handle are excellent and I’m sure will be long lasting.I’ve given 3 stars due to the extra diy required although it was only a 10 minute job with an old pillow. Totally happy with the end result.

stops the draughts.
It was a good buy. We were troubled with a draughty chimney and condensation. It was a bit awkward to measure but easy to fit. very pleased with purchase.

A natural fibre easy to use chimney plug!
I am very pleased with our chimney sheeps. We ordered 4 of them for the 2 fireplaces in our dining room and 2 in our lounge (big old period style rooms). I noticed the change in temperature very soon and we don't get the wind noises any more, this was noticeable during the recent storm. They were very easy to insert and because of the stick hanging down they won't be forgotten when we want to use our fires. Its also reassuring to know that because they are made of natural fibres they are breathable and allow ventilation to stop damp problems.I would definitely recommend this product.
