You need extra pippettes
We loved being able to check the sugar content of our peaches in our orchard as compared to the grocery store!

Works fine, but...
It works okay, but I wish I'd read the reviews about the foreign characters on the key pad. I'm very irritated, but will work with it; because, it's not worth the effort to return it.

Fantastic replacement for my hydrometer. Love not having to pull such a large sample.
My only problem with this refractometer is the lack of English writing on the front controls. Once you figure it out though, it's quite easy to use. Giving only 4 starts for that inconvenience/learning curve.--I just started making small batches of mead (1-gallon). The one thing I disliked about my setup was pulling 100mL samples into a graduated cylinder, so I could float my hydrometer. Aside from the hassle, I don't like the possibility of contamination my mead by pouring the sample back into the fermenting vessel, as well as the exposure time to air while pulling the sample. So, I decided it was time for Brix refractometer. What a fantastic change. I'm able to use just a few drops.Another thing I didn't like about the hydrometer is at the beginning of a ferment, I might have fruit solids floating in the vessel, which could potentially help buoy up the hydrometer a bit. More concerning for later readings, is that CO2 could make the hydrometer a bit more buoyant. But with this single test, at least the readings between the two devices were comparable.I also bought a manual refractometer, which I have always used in the past, but I lost the one I've had for years after we recently moved. When testing some mead that I just made, my readings with the two devices were comparable:12.2% Brix with this digital meter12.1% Brix with my manual refractometerBoth devices then read 0.0% Brix after retesting with distilled water again. Very pleased with this meter.Be sure to ZERO it ("calibrate" function) with distilled water!

It does work and seems to be of high quality
A "Brix Refractometer" is the technical name of what this Digital Brix Refractometer actually is. That name describes a family of products though, of which this example is one. The definition of one is "Brix refractometers are a common instrument used to measure the sugar content of a solution. Increasing sugar content leads to an increase in the refractive index. By passing light through a sample and measuring the refraction, the amount that the light bends, the sugar content can be measured".Nope, I didn't know these existed before I saw the listing for this one either. It does work and it's pretty much automatic. The tool comes with a couple soft plastic "pipettes" that allow you to suck up a small quantity of whatever it is you want to measure the sugar content of. You then place the open end of the pipette into the stainless steel sample container, and put the contents of the pipette into the container. Pushing the left hand soft touch button starts the examination of the sample. It takes a couple seconds and gives you a digital readout of the sugar content of the sample.I tried to fool it by placing clean tap water into it. It came back as zero, which is what it should have done. I've tried several other samples to check. A small amount of normal strawberry jello gave a higher reading of course. I'll keep testing it with different samples and add to this review after I've had more time to put it to use.

Great quality - simple to use
Very nice economical refractometer. The quality of materials and construction is better than I expected - everything is finished nicely and sealed against moisture and leaks and it works reliably. The screen is in color and is very bright and easy to read - I like it's uncluttered UI - super intuitive to use.I can't vouch for its absolute accuracy since I don't have a reference meter to compare it against. However, for relative measurements to compare changes I make to my own solutions over time, the meter is very consistent - so it is perfect for me.There is one minor issue I have, but does not reflect upon the quality or performance of the meter - The unit shipped to me was designed for the Chinese market and has Chinese characters printed on the buttons instead of English. However, the meter's interface and even the user manual are printed in English - strange mix of things - but it doesn't really bother me so I'll just keep it and I'm still very happy to use the meter. Overall, a great meter!

Sent foeign model keypad
I would have given it more stars but I can't read the keypad I did figure it out of course but I should not had to.This being said I zeroed it out with Demineralized water OK and checked it with some Organic Apple juice and got a reading of 11.4, according to a web search this is an acceptable normal for Apple Juice so apparently this device does work. I do not have another refractometer to check it against so I can not vouch for complete accuracy.
