Q: Can anybody recommend batteries for this?

Buy the best battery that you can afford. I also recommend that you go with the Lithium battery option and buy the largest Amp Hour (ah) rating that you can afford. The higher the ah the longer the range. You can find many options on Ebay but beware and carefully read about what exactly you are buying and where it comes from. After a lot of research I purchased my 48v (52v at full capacity) 20 ah battery pack from calibike.com as well. He met all the criteria that I was looking for including... Excellent price. The price included a top quality charger. Excellent built quality including the Battery Management System (BMS). He is located in the USA. I received my battery in less than a week. If you buy from over seas / China it can take a month or more to receive your order. I spoke to Calibike extensively via email and by phone before making my purchase. The owner was very happy to answer any and all my questions and was very prompt with replying. Take note of his recommendation on what size and type of fuse to get (the fuse set up with the kit is rubbish and you will soon be replacing it).That said, Also consider and plan for how you will carry/ attach the battery pack and ESC to your bike. The bag that comes with the kit is of poor quality and does not attach very securely nor will it last very long. As you are no doubt finding out the batteries cost more than the kit itself. Protect your investment.

Q: How wide does the rear triangle need to be to fit the hub? I have a narrow single-speed bike and am worried from reviews it won't fit

Great Question! The quick answer is the rear triangle needs to be much wider than a single speed. I have installed this kit on 2 different multi-speed bikes and had to widen the triangle on each one. I don't have specific measurements to give you but you will need to cold form the triangle to fit the hub. It is not hard to do if you are handy with tools. Other questions you need to ask are... Brakes. If you have a single speed with a coaster brake, Forget it. You will need to get a caliper type break kit (and a good one at that). Second is you are going to have a multi gear rear wheel with no derailier. Adjusting the chain so it stays on is going to be difficult at best. you could swap out the multi gear freewheel for a single speed but that will open up more problems and not solve the braking problem.My quick advice to you if you want to build one of these is to find a different bike. you will probably have to modify that as well but not as drastically. These things are a blast but you want to make sure you have a safe and solid set up.I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Q: Am I correct in thinking this kit does not have peddle assist?

It does not have pedal assist, only thumb throttle. If it did have pedal assist, you would see a 4" or 5" disk shaped sensor for the crank. I prefer thumb throttle, but some places require the pedal assist sensor. Pedal assist starts the motor working when you start moving the pedals.
