Best for coding
Value for money is great I mean 3 for 9 is a steal, it's easy to us, it's small it's wifi is also good. Functions as it is expected na d build quality is good.

Good if needing more I/O than the D1 Mini
These are ok boards that worked fine when I tested from PlatformIO. While the Wemos D1 Mini is the defacto standard for 8266 projects, it has a limited number of I/O pins; this is a reasonable alternative if needing more. I used an upload speed of 921600 baud for fast programming, and 115200 as a monitor port speed. There was actually never an official NodeMCU v3, and these are copies of the v2 with minor modifications by LoLin that they branded as a v3. I selected nodemcuv2 for the board type in PlatformIO.One change over v2 is that these are wider, and there are some breadboards that they won't fit, and there can be limited space on others. Mine had just one row of holes on either side. The boards come with header pins pre soldered, which is handy when prototyping, but may not be ideal if deploying into a project due to the space they take up. I tested with a simple blink program, and then a program to scan for wifi access points. Despite the ESP module and potentially the processor being clones, both programs ran without a problem and access points I expected to see were shown. However, as these use the 12E module and not the 12F, WiFi performance may not be as good as it could be as the 12F module has a better antenna design.Overall, decent value boards.

Simple, good quality & low cost microcontrollers
These ESP8266 microcontrollers are simpler and better value than their ESP32 big brothers, but are capable of running some of the same projects. I've been using them for running ESPHome and controlling devices with Home Assistant. They are very cost effective and use very little power. They're very good value at less than £4 per board at the time of ordering. Some projects may require something more powerful, but if your project just requires WiFi and GPIO and you want something that's going to sip power, then these are a good option.
