Alien Romulus

Terrific value, magnificent movie.
Alien: Romulus is a terrific movie. Filled with the action and horror we all know and love from the Alien franchise. Also great cast and fantastic special effects. The 4K is a stunning presentation of this wonderful thriller.Amazon have slipped lately, making me wait an entire week to deliver this new title, actually not dispatching until 3 days after order, to meet the disappointing delivery estimate. I'm a Prime Member, but lately it's only for Prime Video. The One-Day deliveries have been shocking few and far between for me.But a brilliant addition to my collection. Plus great value from Fox/Disney, bundling both the 4K and regular Blu-ray disc together for only £10 more over the solo Blu-ray, meaning you get the 4K disc for an extra tenner. Can't go wrong with that. And also comes in a slip case, so you could sell off the Blu-ray for a smaller price to a mate and give them a sleeve with it of your choosing and recoup some cash on your 4K. Sweet. In space, you can hear me scream my love for this flick.

Poor cast, great re-imagining of the concept!
I bought this on 4K after seeing a You Tube video by Corridor Crew about the special effects, and I wasn't disappointed - visually, it's a masterpiece, including the SFX and astonishing attention to detail in the thematic design elements. I liked the direction too, but the casting is disappointing. Other reviewers have mentioned that the characters are all too young, and they are - they're not remotely credible in their roles, and I can't fathom the fascination that casting directors have for coarse Brits in such roles - why?!? But the story is great - our thoroughly unlikeable crew set out on an ambition of liberty, and inadvertently trigger terrible consequences wherein our alien friends behave true-to-form in imaginatively-written vicious ways - and this is where the casting really fails: I would have been far more gripped by the horror if I'd cared a damn about the horrible ends the characters meet; the original Alien movie is a shining example of this. The re-creation of that movie's 'Ash' character (the late, great Ian Holm) was excellently done and most welcome as a character called 'Rook', and I wish he'd had a cast like the original movie's against whom to play. I was pleased to see him hold true to the sociopathic Weyland-Yutani corporate ethos, a reprise of an AI's admiration for the 'purity' of the alien, again, ominously, from the first movie. Pleasingly, the story's unfoldment is unpredictable and the end is as good as any movie in the franchise, so well done to the writers too. The soundtrack is extremely good but occasionally a little over-zealous, overpowering some of the visual thrills. On balance, I know I'll enjoy watching the movie again and again, even though it may take me a while to suspend disbelief over the credibility of the implausibly young cast, but the movie's redeeming factors do outweigh its shortcomings. This is a 4K movie that deserves viewing in any home theater, however advanced, for years to come.

Great addition to the franchise.
I like another reviewer rate Prometheus!I enjoyed Romulus, very much. A good story and a refreshing younger cast, a worthy addition to the Alien franchise. This steelbook has some great artwork, much better than the standard package, in my opinion.I have even got my Hot Toys figure of Rain on order, looks fantastic, so life like, a piece of art!!

Where's the tension?
A decent watch but not special. I'm slightly disappointed as I love the Alien movies. Of the major ones, I think it's the weakest in some ways. The plot was minimal and was a less interesting rehash of Alien 3. Nothing was added to the lore. The cast was bland and not a patch on Ripley and Hicks etc. The original Alien and Aliens casts particularly blow them out of the water. Direction was solid without being dazzling but somehow the CGI/effects just seemed a little too 'glossy' for this universe. I felt very little suspense throughout the movie and had a strong sense that I'd seen every scene before (after the slow first 20 mins). The only thing that really stood out for me was David Jonsson and the Andy character. I was rooting for Andy (bad or good lol). It's not a bad film. It's not a major letdown. Pretty much everything is competent to a level you would expect of this franchise. BUT it wasn't compelling for me and for the first time I felt no tension or horror throughout the movie when the xenomorphs appeared. I will watch it again and hope it will grow on me (or reveal more than I got on first watch).
