Excellent tool
It's very firm. Very robust, it should last for years. Not smelly. I am reviewing the black extra firm version. As for its ability to give a deep massage, it is definitely at the extreme range of pressure produced. It can be painful using it, but no pain no gain. Or 'if it isn't hurting, it's not working'.It is very effective at loosening up knots and impingements in muscles and ligaments.I 100% recommend this. The only question is 'can you handle it?'

Great Roller...
Great roller. I have the smaller version of this rumble roller so I knew what to expect! It is firm, so can be painful when rolling over sensitive muscles BUT, does a really great job at kneeding out the knots and loosening stiff muscles. I wouldn't use an ordinary foam roller again, unless it was the only thing I had access to, I would definitely use one of these. The only downside was the ridiculously sized packaging that it was delivered in.

Wow!
Rumble Rollers have helped me rehabilitate a set of persistent mid back and shoulder problems that have been troubling me for the past 8 years. After 5 weeks and in combination with kettle bell training, stretching and hot & cold treatment my spine feel springy and supple and I have increased movement in my shoulders.Purchased three of them: Black, blue and travel as was considering paying £3 grand for back mobiliser so thought why not see if these would help for a fraction of that cost. I mostly use the black as I have a relatively high discomfort threshold.I would say these nifty things are better than using a physio as I do not have to book/pay every time I use them so I can get the benefit as often as I want (I may roll up to 5 times a day for three minutes each time). After a bit of practice and acclimatisation (uncomfortable at first) I was able to edge into those trigger points like a pro, or roll more rapidly to stimulate circulation to the damaged areas.Wish I'd known about these sooner.

Brilliant piece of kit
Recommended by my Physio, this product is a must for any athlete that needs regular massage to reduce injuries. I was suffering ITB strain and the Rumble Roller cured it. This product can give you a deep sports massage, when and where you need it. You control the amount of pressure so you also control the pain. It does hurt when you pinpoint muscle damage, which is good because you can work on that area and ease out any muscle tears. It's a bit expensive to buy, but will pay for itself very quickly.

Use carefully to begin with....
Product was described as blue, I got a odd greeny black colour. The instructions fail to point out that this tool, if you build its use gradually, will also help develop upper body strength particularly the shoulders. Almost all of the exercises require that you have to support your bodyweight on your arms. Care should be taken to maintain good posture, in the shoulders especially, as it would be quite easy to injure yourself.

Painful, but effective!
Having had some trouble with my lower legs whilst training - shin pain if I run, and calf pains/cramps doing my martial arts training, I'd heard about foam rolling and thought I'd give it a try. When I saw the Rumble Roller, the knobbly bits looked like a logical progression. If you've never tried foam rolling before, it does take some getting used to, but practise makes perfect, and there's a leaflet included, not to mention numerous guides on the internet. If you've got knots, this will help to get them out, but it can be painful, and it's a matter of trying different ways of sitting and lying with different amounts of pressure of muscles on roller until you find what works for you. It can be painful, I admit, particularly on softer ares, but it is pretty effective and cheaper than paying for sports massages on a regular basis, and the pain can be lessened by the aforemention pressure variations. You need to find what works for YOU.Apparently the black version is firmer, but believe me, if you're new to this, the blue is more than firm enough!

No pain no gain
I originally purchased the blue roller after having read a number of reviews saying start with blue as black is very hard. Having used the blue roller when I did not have any form of injury I found the blue roller to be too soft and not giving me the massage I was hoping for. That said I do like a hard massage so just my personal preference. I then moved to the black roller and by this time I had undertaken a boot camp where I was put through lots of squats which is something I had not previously done (more of a runner). So managed to have very tender IT bands on both legs and the black roller is painful. There is a noticeable difference when using the black version when you have an injury compared to the blue roller. I prefer the black roller, though painful, does make a difference and I can feel the benefits of 'rolling' even for only a minute at a time. Why only 4 stars? The product is expensive for what it is, hence the reason for 4 instead of 5, but am very satisfied with the product.UPDATE - May 2022 Have had this product for nearly 9 years and I use it on regular basis and it is still as good as the day I purchased. I always take it on holiday to use before/after a run. Have upgraded to 5 stars on the basis it has been worth the cost
